what is the most modern, efficient way to store old video/camcorder footage?
also have memory stick pics i want to save pics on new media.
what is the newest and greatest but dependable storage to transfer all the info on?
i dont want all these “tapes” or mini Dv’s sitting around.
i want to pay someone to transfer the info over for me but dont particularly want people seeing my personal stuff. What is the best way to transfer the media over?

Most people who record to tape actually keep the tapes as an archive. its the most cost effective and secure way to keep them. As you say the only down side is the room they take up. do not put them onto DVD the quality will be reduced, and if you ever want to edit them again you will reduce the quality even more.
A hard drive is the second best option, BUT remember they dont last forever, and if the drive dies you have lost the lot. Customers tapes are in sealed storage box’s and on backup drives , My own are in sealed food containers, and kept in a cupboard, with a few packets of silica jell, (little bags that come with electronic goods).
You do not say if you have the camera, but the only way to get the video onto your computer is Via firewire, you do not have to use the same camera as you originally recorded it on. UNLESS you use LP, as this is not a standard speed you need to use the same make and model to be sure of it working. Firewire is a devices that transfers/captures video from your camera to your computer, if you check in your device manager for a device called IEEE1394, its the same as firewire, if its there you only need the camera and cable, if its not you can get a cable and card for around $20. and they are so simple to fit. Windows movie maker will capture the video perfectly.
Most good companies that transfer video dont bother with the content, unless there is something that is not legal, but they dont sit there watching every bit of it. remember they have probably seen it before. You could probably get them to do it for around $10 per tape.
If you need advice on this just ask, as for your pictures your Memory sticks are fine.
Depending on how many you have each tape will take up around 13GB. so on a 1TB drive you could get nearly 80 full tapes.
