High definition camcorder use is increasing and consequently so is the use of digital storage for it. This article will show some of the common storage methods for high-definition cameras and that should be taken into account.
- Optical Disk – This may be a DVD or Blu-ray. The only difference between the 2 is the storage space. Blu ray can store more video on DVD. But DVD is much more compatible, works with any standard DVD player in your PC as well. To use Blu-ray requires a Blu-Ray player, a PlayStation 3 or a Blu-Ray for your computer. This is not as common as DVD.
- Hard drive – Some camcorders are built with hard drives in them. They may be small about 32 GB or very high, about 120 GB. This is enough storage for video. The only potential problem is that the camcorder is broken before transferring the video below, you can not retrieve the video from the unit.
- Memory Cards – This is a very popular option. The main types of storage are SD, SDHC, XD and Memory Sticks. You can buy some of these to not run out of space.
These are the main digital formats is also available in tape storage in major miniDV and Hi8 formats. Most consumers are moving away from the film and media digital and I would recommend that too. Will not be long before the tapes are completely obsolete.
Should I go with a miniDV camcorder or a hard drive camcorder?
I'm so confused! I've heard the hard disk format is compressed while the quality of the video, when played on a bigger TV, has much image noise. The articles I've read say that the miniDV format is better for image quality and editing on a PC. I want to kill my home movies and playing with them at the Media Center PC and burn DVD movies. Help! I'm so confused!
You will be happier with MiniDV. The video is captured without any compression. You can edit without adding compression artifacts. The only time your level of video compression is when encoding for DVD.
