Archos AV400 mains adaptor problem?

I have an Archos portable video recorder/Player Model AV400 with 80GB hard disk with internal rechargeable battery and mains adapter for longer indoor use and recharging.

Unfortunately the mains adapter malfunctioned and I am abroad for 2 months and cant find a correct replacement in stock anywhere.
But noticed a camcorder mains adapter I have with me, had a similar DC connector and upon connecting it the Archos worked with it. However there is a difference in the Output Voltage/Amp specification and I am concerned it may cause damage to the Video recorder.

The original adapter is DC output; 5V,1.6 A and the camcorder adapter I am trying on it has a higher Output, DC 8.4 V, 1.5A.
Question: Is the extra voltage going to cause damage to the Archos unit or can I use the temp adaptor until I can get proper replacement in about 2 month time when returning home?

The charging circuit in most players have a voltage regulation circuit that is designed to accept adapters that provide a slightly higher voltage than is actually needed to charge and run the players. The Archos battery is probably 3.7v which is standard for lithium-ion batteries. The charging voltage needs to be somewhere above that so I would guess the operating voltage needed is around 4 – 4.5 volts.

The voltage regulating circuits are designed to take the 5 volts as input and output the operating voltage. In doing so, they will dissipate heat and are designed for a maximum input voltage.

The question is how tolerant the voltage regulating circuits are of input voltages significantly higher than what they are expecting. You might be fine with the Archos running a bit hot while on charge – or you may be setting the stage for a failure of the regulator which will totally disable the device.

This product works just as well as the canon nb-6l battery that came with my Canon s90.

It holds its charge for the same amount of time as the Canon battery, charges in the same amount of time as the Canon battery, and for a fraction of the price, this product is a steal.

I always carry my spare, and I use it all of the time.

Definitely a must have!

I’ve only had the battery for about a month, but it’s surpassed my expectations so far.. I took it on a trip to Korea (South..) as a back up. The specs for the camera (Canon SD1200IS) said it could take like 250 pics with one battery charge. Well I got up to 390 pics and the battery meter was just starting to waiver between full and 2/3 bars. I went to change batteries anyway as the majority of the trip was over, and I realized I had this battery in all along and not the supplied Canon battery. Oh, and probably took 5-6 videos of about 1 minute as well as the 390 pics.

I ordered this battery for my Canon S90, but when I tried to insert it it would not go in all the way. So I examined it next to my genuine Canon battery and it appeared to be identical. So I fiddled with it some more and discovered that the top of the battery was loose and wobbly, so if I pressed on it to straighten it out, THEN it inserted into the camera. Obviously it’s a cheap knockoff from some sweatshop factory. Once it was in the camera it seemed to work fine, but you definitely get what you pay for regarding batteries.

Good OEM battery for the S90

I don’t know why anyone would pay 5 times as much for the Canon battery. I bought two of these as spares and they work fine.

They are not as well finished as the original, but seem to work fine.
