While you are positioning the subject, selecting an angle or looking at the LCD screen or through the viewfinder, the lens moves automatically and the battery is used. The battery is also used when a tape is inserted or removed. Try to have sufficient camcorder battery pack power to do 2 to 3 times as much recording as you have planned.
Never leave the battery pack in temperature above 140ºF (60ºC), such as in a car parked in the sun or under direct sunlight. During charging or recording, the battery pack heats up which is caused by energy that has been generated and a chemical change that has occurred inside it, so this is normal and there is no cause for concern. Always remove your battery pack from the unit after using it, and keep it in a cool place. When the battery pack is installed to the camcorder, a small amount of current flows to the camcorder even if the POWER switch is set to OFF as a result the battery life is shortened. The battery pack is always discharging even when it is not in use after charging, therefore, you should charge it right before using the unit.

If the battery indicator flashes rapidly just after turning on the camcorder, the battery pack should be replaced with a new fully charged one. A brand-new battery pack is not charged. Before using the it, charge it completely, you do not have to discharge it before recharging. If you charged the battery pack fully but did not use it for a long time, it becomes discharged, so recharge it before use.
If the terminals are not clean, the battery charge duration will be shortened. Repeatedly installing and removing the it a few times improves the contact condition. Occasionally wipe the positive and negative terminals with a soft cloth or paper. Always keep the it away from fire and also keep it dry. Do not open nor try to disassemble it. Archos AV400 mains adaptor problem?
I have an Archos portable video recorder/Player Model AV400 with 80GB hard disk with internal rechargeable battery and mains adapter for longer indoor use and recharging.
Unfortunately the mains adapter malfunctioned and I am abroad for 2 months and cant find a correct replacement in stock anywhere.
But noticed a camcorder mains adapter I have with me, had a similar DC connector and upon connecting it the Archos worked with it. However there is a difference in the Output Voltage/Amp specification and I am concerned it may cause damage to the Video recorder.
The original adapter is DC output; 5V,1.6 A and the camcorder adapter I am trying on it has a higher Output, DC 8.4 V, 1.5A.
Question: Is the extra voltage going to cause damage to the Archos unit or can I use the temp adaptor until I can get proper replacement in about 2 month time when returning home?
The charging circuit in most players have a voltage regulation circuit that is designed to accept adapters that provide a slightly higher voltage than is actually needed to charge and run the players. The Archos battery is probably 3.7v which is standard for lithium-ion batteries. The charging voltage needs to be somewhere above that so I would guess the operating voltage needed is around 4 – 4.5 volts.
The voltage regulating circuits are designed to take the 5 volts as input and output the operating voltage. In doing so, they will dissipate heat and are designed for a maximum input voltage.
The question is how tolerant the voltage regulating circuits are of input voltages significantly higher than what they are expecting. You might be fine with the Archos running a bit hot while on charge – or you may be setting the stage for a failure of the regulator which will totally disable the device.
