Camcorder Computer Software

Camcorder Computer Software

As technology continues to advance, new and more complicated media equipment is available to the general public. Camcorders Digital is no exception. As quickly as the film-use camera is obsolete for Shutterbug average, HSV also have gone the way of dinosaurs. Everything, it seems, has gone digital and the convenience is just one of many reasons. Video cameras also offer newer digital compact size, better image quality and faster display capability.

The same activities that were recorded with bulky video cameras of the Decade of 1980 and early 1990s are still very popular today. Children's sporting events, award ceremonies, family gatherings, presentations and other special moments are the memories that people want to preserve. The difference now is the accessibility of the images and the ability to share with people around the world in seconds. But, How digital camcorders work?

For gearheads and technophiles, there is no mystery to the operation of most equipment digital. But for the average consumer, the most basic operation can be perplexing. Here's a look at how a few different types of digital video cameras work.

As with film cameras and analog video cameras, digital video cameras use a lens to view images that record. These lenses transform the various elements of the image in front of the camera on the information that can be processed and recorded. In a video recorder, these focus lenses to light the colors of the intensity in a semiconductor image sensor. This sensor is called a charge-coupled device, or CCD. Most of them a camera, better image quality. The final step in the operation of the digital video camera is what separates them from older camcorders. The information is converted into bytes data. The contrast and colors become binary code (0s and 1s), and this information is stored as digital video.

Most cameras digital video in the market for big brands use MiniDV tape, which processes and stores digital information. These tapes are a fraction of the size of the old cassettes VHS. Digital video is the standard for home and semi-professional video production and is sometimes used by the media. Beginning at the camera professional digital video with three CCDs and records in DV CAM or MiniDV tapes.

Digital camcorders have a FireWire port on the back of the camera plugs directly into your computer. The camera data is sent to the computer's hard drive. Video files can be edited with the right software, if desired.

Very compact digital camcorders with limited recording time (approx. 60 minutes) and the ability of the lens. These are useful for exchanging video fast and convenient and allow for easy transport. They require no memory card and connect directly to your computer with a USB connector. For long recording or better image quality, MiniDV camcorders are a better choice.

Low-end digital systems that do not use tapes to record in MPEG-4 as the memory digital. Some versions of higher end-use hard disks or memory cards instead. This allows more data to be stored, therefore the best image quality.

The Most manufacturers of digital video cameras focus on the most commonly used computer operating systems. Windows and Mac based computers are generally compatible with most cameras on the market. Beyond these, consumers may have problems. Some tape devices are recording less compatible with anything but Windows, so consumers should be sure to check the details before making a purchase.

Terrible sound quality

by M. Bass from Annandale, VA USA on 2010-09-08
I bought this in order to capture kids’ shows off of my DVR and make a DVD for the car. I wasn’t even all that concerned about having the best video quality. As it turned out, the video quality was so-so (good enough, but not great), but the audio was horrible. After tinkering with all of the various capture settings (e.g. file format, frame size, frame rate, etc) and setting to the highest possible quality, it was still awful. I even set the bit rate as high as 320 but it didn’t help. No matter what I did the audio was hard to hear unless you cranked the volume, and even then there was still a lot of static. I tried it with 2 different DVRs and 2 different cables with the same result, so I know that’s not the problem. I figured the software that came with it (ULEAD Easy Capture) might be the problem, so I tried it with Nero, but then I couldn’t capture any sound at all! Total silence on every file I created.

Conclusion: Avoid this product; it is a waste of money. Spend a little more on something better.

Video Capture Card

Device works fine, but it came with sketchy instructions on how to capture to PC.

USB video/audio capture

by Mr. Floyd M. Heafner from on 2010-07-23
The video portion works fine but the audio is badly distorted. I found that I could by-pass the audio input and connect it straight into my computer’s audio line in and record what I wanted.

It DOES work on Windows 7 64-bit

by Matt C. from on 2010-07-08
This product works quite well, and it does work on Windows 7, both 32-bit and 64-bit. To get it to work on those two systems this is what you do: Go to youtube, and search: easycap on windows 7

Once you find a video, there should be links in the description of the video for the drivers. Once you are finished it should work perfectly fine because it works awesome for me and I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on my laptop. Hope this helps for those of you who are wondering how to get it to work on windows 7. Let me know if you have problems and I will try my best to help you out. Thanks.

Don’t waste your money

by thecrwth from Mass on 2010-06-28
There is a reason why this is so cheap. Before you think of buying this read up on the internet about how many problems people have with this. The audio feed does automatically appear as an option for a capture. With much tinkering I got the option. Using the option messed up the time stamp on the video and resulted in unusable clips. When I did manage to get the audio it was garbled. Setting the recording device just reduced the volume and did not remove any stray noises.

Video capture on a budget

by Richard from on 2010-09-02
After searching the net for a video capture device for my Windows 7 system, I found only 2 choices that claimed to actually work on windows 7. One was a fire-wire device for $200 and the other was the EZcap device. Since I only occasionally convert video, I went for the much cheaper solution. The product works but there is a problem with the sound USB driver included in the package. It did not work!. Found this on You Tube [...]. This shows how to install sound drivers and has link to working driver. Only other problem I saw while digitizing my videos is the sound would drop out momentarily while recording.

What a relief

by T Cardin from Atlanta, GA on 2004-01-01
I had already ordered Pinnacle Studio DV from Dell when I started reading all of the horrible reviews. I bought the program after seeing some DVDs that my boss made of his son’s football games & he said he had no problems. When it arrived I decided to try it and hope for the best & I’m glad I did. I captured about 90 minutes of video that I had shot using a Sony TRV-350. The capture process when very smoothly. Editing confused me at first (I didn’t want to read the manual) but I caught on quickly and edited the video down to about 30 minutes of scenes that I wanted to burn to DVD. The rendering process did take a while: 30 to 45 minutes but when it was done my dvd drive spit out a completed dvd with the titles and transitions that I added and it looked great when I played it in by DVD player. I had no problems at all during the entire process including installation. I did follow Pinnacle’s recommendations and bought a separate hard drive for capturing and I made sure no other applications were running in XP. I am very pleased with the product. I do have a new system: Dell 4600, 2.6ghz P4, 512 RAM, 40 GB internal, 80GB Western Digital firewire external hardrive (I used the card that came with Pinnacle for the firewire connection as the Dell 4600 didn’ have one – the Pinnacle card comes with two connections one of which you must use for your digital camcorder). I am very pleased with this product.

Great when it works, Can be really frustrating

by Jonathan Bier from Ashland, MA United States on 2003-10-22
I bought this software over a year ago to edit video from my Sony Digital 8 camera.Installation:It took me close to 3 months to setup because of issues between Windows ME and the included FireWire card. I actually had to hack the Microsoft drivers .INF file to get the card to work properly on my system.User InterfaceThe software is amazing easy to use. The user interface is very intuitive. To capture, hookup your Digital camcorder to the Firewire card with the included cable. You just say you want to record and up to 15 minutes of video is transfered at a time. This is due to a limit in the size of AVI files. The system is capable of automatically sensing scene breaks, so when it captures, it automatically organizes scenes. For editing, it just have to arrange the scenes. You can also shorten the scenes through again a very good UI.The software has 3 voice tracks. You can easily add music from MP3s or CDs to your video. You can also do voiceovers ( I haven’t tried this yet ). If you are making DVDs, you can add chapters and menus. The UI for doing this is pretty good as well. You can also add stills. I’ve made many videos which are combination of video and stills pictues from a digital cameraThe software comes with many transitions. You can do fads and other cool effects. You can output your movie to DVD, S-VCD, VCD, RealNetworks, Microsoft Media Player Format, or MPEG ( No Quicktime support ).Now the bad: The software has been very unreliable, at times, I lost hours of work. Anyone who looks at the message boards will see that the user base of this software is generally unhappy. I seem to finally have a patch that has made the software reasonable reliable. I can honestly say that I love the software but have never been so frustrated with the qauality of a piece of software before. When it works its really good, but it doesn’t always work. Because of the unreliability of the software, I would not recommend it to a computer novice.

Sarcastic customer service and flaky card

by from on 2003-02-11
I tried to pair the card in this package with the new Maxtor 5000DV. The Pinnacle card toasts the Maxtor drive every time. Maxtor customer service can replicate my error and has been very helpful. Pinnacle customer service has been sarcastic, irresponsible, and completely unhelpful. The Pinnacle software only offers minor improvements over my existing software, so I’m out [$$$] and have a worthless Pinnacle package sitting in the closet.Don’t buy from Pinnacle until they get their customer service reps up to snuff!

Poor quality hardware and non-responsive customer support

by Jeffrey Hsu from Pittsburgh, PA United States on 2003-01-16
It’s been about two weeks since I first received my Studio DV V8. Installation was fairly straight forward. I notice the quality of the IEEE-1394 PCI card was more on the low cost side and the IEEE-1394 6-pin/4-pin cable fit very loosely into my Sony DV. When I start the capture, computer lock-up and I have to cycle the power to get out of it. – There are no 800 numbers for phone tech support and tech support hours are 10-7 EST M-F; which can’t be utilized by me.- I had logged this problem with them twice via web support in the last two weeks and had not heard anything from them.(I will update the review if I ever get an answer back from them.)

Works for Yamaha mlan

by Don Mcgraw from Spartan Vegas, SC on 2005-07-17
I purchased this for use with professional audio recording software based on Yamaha’s mlan protocol. My Vaio laptop had a 4 pin firewire put the chipset didn’t have enough horsepower to run the protocol. Loaded without drivers and I was off to the races. It also allows me to keep my external firewire hard drive connected. Thumbs up!

Great.

by Chughtai from Dublin, Ireland on 2003-10-07
This is one amazing product, I got this for my laptop Inspiron 8100. Though, I already had a 4 pin firewire port but the problem as you may or may not know is, 4-pin firewire can not supply power to the connected device. Most of the firewire devices i have are dependent on bus-power e.g. Compact Flash reader, so I chose adaptec card bus as it have an optional power input line so the connected devices can draw power.Overall, its very handy and useful plus the installation was smooth (you just plug & play, XP will instantly detect it).p.s. just a little thought, firewire have nothing to do with “video editing” nor it will improve with using different software. FIREWIRE is a communication standard i.e. IEEE 1394/1394b , the later is also known as FireWire800 and gives twice as fast speed as normal firewire.

get adaptec’s duo connect instead

by from on 2003-09-09
Adaptec has a Duo Connect PCMCIA card that has both a firewire and a USB 2.0 port. This is perfect for video editing on a PC laptop: connect a camera to the firewire port and an external hard drive to the USB 2.0 port. When not video editing, you can use the extra USB port for your printer, mouse, etc., or keep the hard drive attached to run games.

Minolta Dimage F100 4MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom
Minolta Dimage F100 4MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom
List Price: $499.99

Average Rating:

Description

Minolta has packed quite a punch into the compact, 4-megapixel DiMAGE F100, adding a 7.5x total zoom, movie mode, and audio recording capability so you can leave yourself notes about your shots. Even better, Minolta has done a great job of making the camera fun and easy to use, which is essential in any camera, but invaluable in today’s crowded compact digital-camera market. The 4-megapixel resolution of the F100 produces very large images that are fantastic for prints larger than 11 by 14 inches. Thankfully, the F100 allows you to step down the resolution to a more manageable 2-megapixel level (1,600 x 1,200 pixels) if you need the space on your memory card. Its 3x optical zoom lens aids in photo composition, and an additional 2.5x digital zoom (7.5x total) further magnifies your image. Remember, however, that digital zoom reduces the sharpness and detail of your image, so it’s best used sparingly. Minolta built in some great autofocus features to help make your life easier, including wide-focus area autofocus, and spot-focus areas with focus-area selection (which enables you choose a specific, narrow focus field). During our testing, the autofocus worked beautifully, and we never ended up with our target out of focus. The F100 uses AA batteries and, disappointingly, comes with a set of disposables. We used the camera at a family gathering over the course of a weekend, and the batteries held up fine, so the power drain isn’t as horrendous as in past digital cameras. Ideally, though, you’ll want to buy a set of rechargeables, to help preserve your sanity, pocketbook, and the environment. Overall, the DiMAGE F100 performs admirably and is the perfect size to carry just about anywhere. –Michael Lewis Pros: 4-megapixel resolution produces fantastically rich prints up to 11 x 14 inches Nice bonuses, including movie mode and audio recording for notes to yourself 7.5x total zoom Compact size Cons: 3x optical zoom is serviceable, but you can always use more Includes disposable batteries–you’ll want to add rechargeables

Take the quick and easy route to high-quality images with the stylish 4-megapixel Minolta DiMAGE F100. Optics and Resolution With its 4 million effective pixels, the DiMAGE F100 captures sharp, detail-rich images. At this level of resolution, you can turn your shots into photo-quality prints that are larger than postcards or even enlargements of up to 11 by 14 inches. A wide zoom range is an essential tool for framing the shot you’re looking for. The F100 offers 3x optical zoom, with a range covering the equivalent of 38mm to 114mm on a 35mm film camera. When you’ve reached the limit of the optical zoon, the F100 then shifts into its digital zoom, providing an added 2.5x magnification–for a total of 7.5x zoom and a telescopic 285mm (equivalent) focal length. The F100 features area AF (autofocus), which automatically follows the movement of your subject within the autofocus area, switching the active focusing block to make sure the subject stays sharp. Camera response is further enhanced by rapid autofocusing via to the ultrafast ASIC circuitry, a sophisticated focusing algorithm, and quick lens adjustment. You’ll get focusing speeds of approximately 0.35 seconds at the widest lens angle and approx. 0.5 seconds in telephoto (1 meter). More Features A movie mode captures video clips with sound. Depending upon resolution, these clips can last up to 35 seconds. Movie files are recorded in JPEG format (320 x 240 pixels). The limited length and resolution of these clips guarantees that this feature won’t replace your camcorder, but it’s perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative. The F100 is also equipped with audio-only recording, which can be a convenient tool for taking notes. A single clip can be 30 minutes long, and is stored as an 8-bit uncompressed wave file. Playback is not included. Keep a record of where and when you took a particular shot by adding an audio caption to it. Captions are recorded after image capture, and can be 5 or 15 seconds long. The built-in flash features a TTL (through-the-lens) flash metering system, and has a variety of selectable flash modes. When the camera is set to auto, you have four modes to choose from: auto, manual fill-flash, red-eye reduction, and flash cancel. Power The included CR-V3 lithium battery provides power. You can also use a pair of AA batteries. We recommend getting a set or two of rechargeable nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries and a charger. A digital camera is power intensive, especially if you’re using the camera’s LCD display, so they aren’t recommended except in a pinch. To ensure you’ll always be ready for action, we recommend having two sets of rechargeables so you can always have one set in the camera and the other set in the charger. Storage and Transfer Images are stored on Secure Digital memory cards. Consider the included 16 MB card a starter capacity, since its 14-picture limit means you’ll need to return to your computer often to transfer images and free up the card for more pictures. A 64 MB card will store nearly 60 images taken in standard mode at a 1,600 x 1,200 resolution. To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera. Your computer should automatically recognize your camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive. Size The DiMAGE F100 is easy to carry around on all your photo expeditions, coming in at just 4.4 by 2.2 by 1.3 inches and 6.5 ounces. Contents and Recommended Accessories The package includes the DiMAGE F100 camera, CR-V3 battery, AV and USB cables, hand strap, software suite, and 16 MB Secure Digital memory card. Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we strongly recommend the addition of a larger memory card, an extra set of rechargeable NiMH batteries and battery charger, and a compact carrying case (for protection and to keep pocket lint out of the viewfinder).

Features

  • 4.13 megapixel (3.95 effective megapixels) sensor creates 2272 x 1704 images for prints at 8 by 10 inches and beyond
  • 3x optical plus 2.5x digital (7.5x total) zoom lens with autofocus
  • Included 16 MB SD card holds 14 images at default resolution
  • Connects with Macs and PCs via USB connector
  • Features subject tracking autofocus

Decent digital camera with minor drawback

by Warchief from SoCal on 2008-10-16
Pros:
- The camera is able to produce high resolution pictures.
- The control panel is easy to navigate.
- The structure is rigid.
Cons:
- The camera is power hungry. It is able to devour a standard NiMH rechargeable battery after a minor usage.
- The video capture is unable to go beyond 35s limit (the device is outdated).
Conclusion: Get a better & modern digital camera if you have money to spend. If you decide to get this gadget, don’t forget to bring extra batteries.

Lens stop working, Twice!

by C. Chan from CA on 2008-01-20
The camera was great when it worked. However, the lens part stopped working twice. The first time the lens just stopped coming out. It cost about over $100 to get it fixed. According to the camera shop, it was some lens part they had to order from Minolta. And then about few months later, the camera was dropped on carpet flooring, and the lens stopped coming out again. That was when we stopped paying to get it fixed.

Other than that, the camera was wonderful. It took great photos, videos, and audios. It lasted about 2 years total. I got it when it first came out, so it was somewhere around $350-$400 dollars.

both of them are broken

by M. Thompson from Fenton, MO on 2005-07-28
I owned this camera and I used one at work. Both of them malfunctioned after about 1 year (lens extension motor stuck open). Also, battery life was terrible. Constantly changing out batteries even when using 2300 NiMHs. LCD viewfinder was useless outdoors.

Great camera for the price

by Svavar O. Svavarsson from Washington, DC on 2005-02-27
This camera takes great pictures and I love the Area Auto Focus that lets you tell the camera where to focus.

My major problem with it is that the selector dial sticks out and can turn when you put the camera in your pocket. This has happened several times and I think it damaged something because the focus stopped working after 4 months of ownership.

Other than that, it is very slow but takes great pictures.

it broke

by eva paulhus from maine on 2004-11-09
i love the quality of the pictures, and it’sfun to use, but the motor broke beyond repair right after the warantee was over. wouldn’t buy another one.
