Great Camera Despite Some Short-comings

by PiddlinRob from BR, LA on 2010-09-10
Briefly, this camera has no filter threads, zooms a little slow, has shutter lag in auto exposure mode especially on an immediate second shot, shutter is pretty responsive in sports mode but burst only produces one shot per second so this model is probably not your best choice for sports unless you are very good at anticipating. It’s lens hood feels a bit flimsy and it’s neck strap is too short. It sometimes makes rather unusual exposure choices in it’s specialized modes and it does not include a printed manual. Oh yeah, no RAW.

It does however seem to somehow end up with really excellent pictures and the image stabilization is remarkable at full zoom. I carry this camera in my bag and use it to grab shots that I could not possibly hope to hand hold with my 100-300 f4-5.6 zoom, (lacks IS) on my 50D or 200mm f4 FD (400mm on micro 4/3rds Lumix G1 ((obviously no IS)). Image quality is similar to the prior mentioned lenses. When I go through my “keepers”, the SX20IS is amply represented. I tell people that the camera seems to chase the shot and despite it’s perceived short comings it produces very impressive results. My SX20IS is golden.

Love the quality of the photos

by jodi winfindale from Hummelstown, Pa United States on 2010-09-09
I bought this camera to take on a vacation to Europe and I love the quality and sharpness of the pictures. I was not disappointed. This was a once in a lifetime trip and I’m thrilled with the memories captured with this camera. The only thing I would change would be the lens cover. I wish it was attached to the camera so when you take it off, it wasn’t easily misplaced or lost. It is designed to clip on the neck strap and it falls off easily.

Excellent out of box, very good customer service

by Carol006 from Maryland on 2010-09-09
I spent a long time looking at cameras and reviews at Amazon and elsewhere before I decided on the SX20 IS. I wanted excellent quality pictures and wide angle capability so I could take pictures of the Grand Canyon on my vacation. I didn’t have much time to learn the camera before the trip, so having a camera that was easy to use–and that performed well on “auto”–was important to me. I also wanted a camera I could grow into, one that offered a lot of manual settings that I could learn how to use later on. I was impressed that the Canon SX20 IS could accomodate a polaroid filter. (A filter adaptor ring for this camera is sold by Lensmate at[...] This was also one of the few cameras available in this category with both a viewfinder and LCD screen. The heft of the camera and the size of the controls were pluses as well, since my husband and I both have large hands. I was very pleased with the pictures I took (mostly with the “auto” feature) as well as the videos. I was also impressed with Canon’s customer service . I needed help on two occasions for “problems” that required more knowledge of the camera than I had when I called customer service. Both times I was able to reach a customer service representative quickly, and got the help I needed. What I wish I would have known ahead of time: a camera in the “travel camera” category would not have had the features I wanted, but it would have been a little easier to lug on hikes.

Great Second or third Camera for travel

by Kenneth A. Klomhaus from Chicago, Il on 2010-08-31
I must first say that except for a Fuji point and shoot, all my cameras are Canon so I may sound a bit like a Canon commercial but I really like this camera. I purchased this camera as an upgrade to my S5IS. I am planning a cruise and am always afraid to take my DSLR cameras and lenses with me for fear of loss or theft and because of weight restrictions on the plane. I used the S5IS on a trip to Bermuda and was thrilled with the results. I created a DVD slide presentation and even on a 50 in HDTV, the shots were fantastic. This camera produces even better pictures, 12 megapixels as apposed to 8 for the S5IS and a 20 times optical zoom as compared with 12 for S5IS. The SX20IS has better video, more features, and a much better zoom. I was amazed with the first shots I took and even when using the digital zoom, the noise was very tolerable and easily fixed with a good photo program. Using the digital zoom, I printed great 4 X 6 prints that were clear and sharp. I also have a Canon G10, a Canon T1i with an 18 -270 Tamaron lens, and a Canon XTI with a Sigma 18 – 200 lens. When I compared the quality of photos between the these cameras and the SX20IS the DSLR did win but not by that much. For the price, the SX20IS will be a great camera to take on a trip where space and weight are of a concern. I recommend this camera to anyone who wants an upper end quality point and shoot camera.

Bad Camera

by Michelle from on 2010-08-30
I bought this camera in November of 2009 and 8 months later, the thing was eating my batteries like crazy. I would place a new set of batteries in and the camera immediately tells me they are bad and needs to be changed when the batteries are brand new! Would not recommend buying this camera!

Functional camera kit backpack

by HR from on 2010-09-04
Very nice and functional backpack, well designed to serve the traveler aficionado photographer. I use it to carry my Canon rebel kit with three lenses including a telephoto, a Canon powershot, a Samsung mini DVD camcorder, battery chargers, spare batteries and memories, accessories, 2 mini tripods, cables, and media… all of that easily and safely packed.

On the downside, I have two minor complains: the exterior design does not provide a monopod/tripod attachment which is quite inconvenient; plus it would be great to have an exterior rainproof bag which becomes handy to protect against rain and undesired hands trying to unexpectedly get into the bag while using public transportation very common in the EU and large metropolitan cities.

Tough, Versatile, and Surprising Amount of Storage for Its Size

by Sail Away from on 2010-09-02
If you have an SLR camera and all the fun “toys” that go along with it (lenses, flashes, filters, battery packs, etc.), then you know how nice it can be to have reliable, compact and efficient storage and transportation for those items and the camera!

This bag does a great job for me. I will first tell you my situation, then spell out my LIKES and DISLIKES (if any).

I am a casual photographer, who does a fair amount of traveling. I take photos with my SLR purely for personal use (family, architecture in new cities, vacations, domestic & foreign travel, etc., etc.). When I want to take enough SLR gear in order to have the flexbility I will need in a variety of photograph settings, I need a way to safely and easily transport all that gear. This Canon bag does the job, and it does so very well for me!

In my case, I have literally traveled around the globe with this bag, and have never had any problems with the bag or with gear getting damaged while inside the bag. And, it has handled everything I have thrown at it, in terms of my storage needs! I think that pretty much sums up my review, but here are my LIKES and DISLIKES if you wish to review them.

LIKES:

* My Canon Digital Rebel SLR fits perfectly

* Very flexible interior to handle lots of different gear. The compartments are separated with several thick foam pads, which can be relocated simply by undoing the velcro where it is attached and re’velcroing it elsewhere.

* Lots of room for the SLR camera body, several lenses, flash, even a camcorder along with all that other stuff, if needed!

* Bag is very well-cushioned. The cushioning material used is very high quality. It is dense cushioning (to provide superb protection), but still soft.

* In the top main flap (the flap that closes down over the camera gear compartment), there are 3 good-sized and functional storage areas, each with their own zippered closure system.

* There are also pockets on both sides of the backpack for even more storage of miscellaneous items.

* Handles are strong and secure.

* Zippers are of very high quality, and zip smoothly and effortlessly.

* Backpack straps are very thick and comfortable….also very strong!

* There are hook on the botton of the bag to attach other items, such as a tripod, etc.!

* I have been caught outside in light rain with this bag, and it seemed to repel water very well.

DISLIKES:

The only thing I can think of is the word “Canon” on the bag. It announces to the world that this bag contains camera gear, which may make you a target for a theft.

Other than that, I can’t think of anything else. I LOVE this bag!

Decent value for the price

by axs from Washington, DC on 2010-09-10
First things first, the image shows ‘two’ main compartments in the bag. This is incorrect. It comes with only one compartment.

The bag is of decent quality, but for the price it definitely is ok.

I have canon rebel xs with 18-55 (attached to the camera) and 55-250mm lens and both fit well in the bag.

You get what you pay for.

by sct886 from on 2010-09-08
I’ve had this pack for about three months now. I recently purchased my first digital slr and tried to cut corners with the accessories. I haven’t had tons of opportunities to use the camera so the bag hasn’t had that much use. One initial problem I had is that fitting a camera with a standard lens as well as a modest size telephoto lens is impossible. Also, the fabric close to the main zipper compartment eventually separated from the zipper itself and there is now a hole. About a week after I noticed this, I opened up one of the side comparments and the zipper just broke off in my hand. I gave it three stars because of the price, but would strongly recommend making a bigger investment in a case that will protect you camera and treat you right.

Neat

by Nick from Shelburne VT from on 2010-08-24
An excellent buy at around $13. Well designed, well constructed. Good size (easily accomodates an AVCHD camcorder, such as a Canon VIXIA M300 and associated accessories). One minor nuisance: the top zipper is “protected” (ostensibly from perhaps rain?) by having the fabric edge of the top overlap/cover this zipper. Thus you have to fumble a bit to unzip the top.

“You get what you pay for” does not apply in this case!

by AfghanDon from on 2010-08-23
Being a cheapskate, I looked for the lowest priced case with the interior dimensions to fit my SLR-sized camera (Canon SX20IS). Expecting very little, I was extremely surprised how sturdy and well made this bag was. There is padding all around and the adjustable padded divider allows you to configure this case in whatever way you need. I was offered $25 for this bag one day after receiving it by a guy who told me to stop being so cheap when I ordered it. This is an enthusiastic 5-Star review!

Simple, efficient

by Mind over Matter from In the Mind on 2010-08-26
The Canon CB-2LV Battery Charger for the Canon NB-4L Li-Ion Battery is the simplest, easy-to-use item of its kind I’ve ever owned. The battery slips into the charger body easily, and the AC prongs recess into the body when not in use. What’s not to like? And a point about the camera … Canon uses generic, universal mini-USB connector instead of proprietary nonsense connectors. THREE CHEERS CANON!

Canon CB-2LV

by maladaption from on 2010-08-15
Pros: It works great. Does the job.

Cons: I thought it was going to be an exact duplicate of my factory made charger but it wasn’t. The prongs are not the “flip-type” on the back. Instead, the prongs are attached via a wire. The whole apparatus is much bulkier than I had hoped.

I’ve been using this camera for a couple months now and I love it. Image Stabilization is a new thing for me. Needless to say, this is the best camera I’ve ever owned. Takes great pictures. I’m not sure I’d pay what Amazon is asking for it. I got it for just over $100 which was a great deal.

This camera is fun and easy to use. great for everyday pictures or quick videos. Just do not drop it because it will brake. Otherwise if you are not a professional photographer and just want to take some fun pictures and maybe add some accent colors or have fun making the sky pink and your dog blue then this is the camera for you.

Canon PowerShot – Great small camera

I bought this camera a month ago and have enjoyed the ease of use and clarity of photos since the 1st shot. Takes great dog pics and puppy pics. Also does an excellent job to document my weavings before they are sold. I’m lovin’ this piece of equipment. I had to charge the battery yesterday (1 month on a charge is NOT bad)!

Last of the Enjoyable Canon Digital Elph Camera

by deltasunrise from on 2010-09-01
The Canon PowerShot SD 780IS is my latest and the fourth Digital Elph acquisition. This could very well be the last camera for this Canon branch (with 12+ megapixels)to come with a real-image optical zoom viewfinder. I hope I am wrong on this assumption.

Prove me wrong on the following three points if one could do quality photographic management without a camera viewfinder:

1) Any compact digital camera(including the new Canon brands) which allows the photographer to get a good view of the object in front through the LCD screen, with the sun on his back.

2) Any compact digital camera (including the new Canon brands) which allows the photographer to take rapid succession or panning shots viewing through the LCD screen inches away from the eyes.

3) Conserve battery with a LCD screen only digital camera.

It’s no point in lamenting the whys and the stupidity of doing away with an optical zoom viewfinder on the Digital Elph series, or any similar cameras for that matter. Best Buy doesn’t even carry this Digital Elph model. All PowerShot cameras or similar it carries have only LCD screens.

Compact digital cameras with viewfinders are a vanishing species. If you like a digital camera with a viewfinder, or have ever own a lower than a 10 megapixel Canon PowerShot Digital Elph, get the SD780IS camera. It’s worth it.

great camera, great deal

We wanted this camera for our daughter. Shopped around and found the lowest price via Amazon. Saved over $100.00 from nearest competitor. Even Walmart’s price was $200.00 more. Daughter LOVES the camera and from the pictures I have seen, it takes great pictures.

Great starter DSLR

by Veronica from on 2010-09-10
I’m a newbie to the DSLR world. That being said the Canon T1i was a great camera for me to start out with. I bought one through Amazon 2 months ago and have loved it since. The quality of the pictures is great, the feel of the camera works very well with me, and the value of the camera is amazing compared to other comparable models.

I needed a bit of a learning curve to move into an SLR after using point and shoots for SO many years. I’m still learning the fine points of photography but it’s been an easy learn with this camera.

Value wise I got the camera, a telephoto lens, an 8 gig memory card, and the canon backpack for just under $793. This package priced at my local Best Buy would have cost me just under $1200 with tax. Amazon seems to have prices far lower than most big box stores if you’re looking to buy one.

Since I’ve had the camera I’ve had nothing but great things to tell people about it. It’s very easy to learn/use, it takes as good a picture as you get it to take.

I’m very happy with this camera and plan on learning more about it and it’s other lenses to get the most of it as I can.

Perfect upgrade from the XTi.

by Caitlin Gipson from Lafayette, IN USA on 2010-09-09
I have only had the T1i for one day, so I can’t give you all the ins and outs, ups and downs of this product. But so far, I am in love. The first thing I noticed was that overall, the T1i body is VERY similar to the XTi body. With the exceptions of a larger screen (and the button placement changes because of that) and a repositioned ISO button, everything is very similar.

The battery charges very quickly, and if it is anything like my other canon batteries, it will hold a charge for a very long time.

The screen is large and displays everything, including the menu, gorgeously. The menus themselves are easy to navigate.

The video feature would be great for interview or vlog style videos. Focusing while recording can be very loud (even with USM lenses) so as long as you’re focused on one fixed point and you stay there, you should be fine. (Not to mention that trying to record any heavy action at 30fps isn’t going to produce the greatest quality.) This SHOULD NOT be your main video setup. It’s not equipped for that, and if that’s why you’re purchasing this camera, you’re better off with a different model.

I will most likely update this later with a more extensive review, but for 1 day out of the box, I am very happy with my purchase.

Great Camera

by Johanna & Todd from on 2010-09-09
We bought this camera in order to get better picture quality than our regular point and shoot digital camera and it is amazing. The camera is very user friendly and so far, we have not had any issues with battery life. We are not professionals, so this review will not have a bunch of technical lingo in it, but all we can say is that this was a wonderful purchase. So far, we have not found anything about the camera that we dislike. We would definitely reccommend this camera to anyone who is looking for beautiful pictures in multiple settings.

Description

This telephoto zoom lens is designed with Canon’s Optical Image Stabilizer technology while retaining compactness and lightness, in response to demands of photographers. This high zoom ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88-400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses), and the image stabilizer effect equivalent to a shutter speed about 4 stops faster than the same size lens without Image Stabilizer. In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you could formerly hold a 250mm lens steadily was 1/250th of a second, with Canon’s 4-stop stabilization correction, you could hand-hold at shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second. It also uses a UD-glass lens element to correct chromatic aberration for excellent image quality throughout the zoom range. This new EF-S telephoto lens with great features delivers excellent performance at an affordable price for all photographers.

Incorporating Canon’s Optical Image Stabilizer technology, this Canon 55-250mm telephoto zoom lens captures long distance, low-light shots far better than many comparable lenses, helping you photograph the far-off action of athletes or zoom in for an intimate portrait with a blurred background. The high-zoom-ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88-400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses). More significantly, the image stabilizer effect creates an equivalent shutter speed of roughly four stops faster than the same size lens without an image stabilizer. In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you can hold a 250mm lens steadily is normally 1/250th of a second, this Canon lens will let you hand-hold shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second. The lens also boasts a UD-glass lens element to correct chromatic aberration to create excellent image quality throughout the zoom range. Delivering an excellent performance at an affordable price for all photographers, the 55-250mm lens carries a one-year warranty. Specifications Focal length: 55-250mm Maximum aperture: f/4 to f/5.6 Lens construction: 12 elements in 10 groups, including one UD-glass element Diagonal angle of view: 27 degrees (at 50 feet) to 6 degrees (at 15 feet), with APS-C image sensors Focus adjustment: DC motor, gear-driven (front focusing design) Closest focusing distance: 3.6 feet (0.31x maximum close-up magnification) Filter size: 58mm Dimensions: 2.8 inches in diameter and 4.3 inches long Weight: 13.8 ounces Warranty: 1 year

Great lens for the money

Highly recommend this lens for the money! I am fairly entry-level with my D-SLR. I found this lens easy to use. Great for indoor and outdoor use for family and kid shots.

Good Lens for a good camera

by Mountain Photographer from on 2010-09-07
Just got the camera as well and it works well with this lens. Most of my photos are of the scenery in the mountains of beautiful Western North Carolina. This lens helps me frame and select my images. Very nice.

A so-so item.

by Randy from Nodak on 2010-09-06
I bought this item to improve my zoom range on a Canon XSI. I already had a Quantaray 70-300 which a friend sold me very cheap. Comparing between the two the Canon may be a bit shaper, but overall not really worth the extra money. I believe if I had gone to the next higher series (much more expensive) I would have noticed a different, but I don’t see MUCH between the two for zoom range. I use both frequently though because the zoom ranges are still slightly different. If trying to choose a zoom I would suggest getting the cheaper Quantaray or Sigma. If you really want to go Canon get the next higher series lens.

Great Value for a f4.0-5.6 lenss

by Kenneth R. Depree from Sosua, Dominican Republic on 2010-08-31
I’ve only had the lens for a short time, bought at same time as the Canon T2i to pick up where the 18-55 kit lens leaves off, but have taken some very good photos with it.

However, I learned taking photos at the Patriots vs Rams pre-season game that I will never get “pro” quality photos with in when shooting sports in the burst mode, at least not at night. Actually, night games for the pros are far different than high school teams because lighting was very good. With this lens the camera had no complaint with f5.6, shutter speed of 400, and ISO 1600. But the best shots were when there was a momentary pause in the fast action and of people in the background watching the action because a shutter speed of 400 was not fast enough to get crisp shots of moving people.

Actually, with post processing, most of the game shots are fine for personal enjoyment. But few would cut the mustard for more ambitious use.

Earlier I might have given the lens a 4, maybe even a 3, because of my game experience, but since the game I have learned a lot about lenses and I now know that the photos I got were the best I could expect from this f4.0-5.6 lens.

In day time settings, I have consistently gotten clear, sharp shots but have not yet tried shooting kiteboarders, something I enjoy doing. However, my expectation is that I will, because when the game started at 7:30 pm and there was still some daylight as well as the lights, I was able to shoot with a shutter speed of 500 and lower ISO. Based on this, I believe in sunlight that I will get the shutter speed I need. If that does not prove to be true, I will update this review.

I have not tried the lens in low light, but my guess is this is not the best choice for low light either because the lens does not let in enough light.

In summary, for what I do most of the time, this lens is excellent. And I really appreciate the image stabilizer. If I were going to shoot a lot of night football I would start saving for an f2.8 lens, but they are quite expensive.

Great gadget bag!

by T. Baxter from N.E. Ohio on 2010-08-19
This is a great gadget bag for a small to medium sized camera. It has plenty of room for camera accessories, extra batteries, memory cards, mini tripod, chargers, extra lenses, and it even has straps to hold a full-sized tripod underneath. You can’t go wrong for the money. It is well-padded, and comes with plenty of dividers which can be configured for your personal preferences.

This bag holds my Canon 1000D and an extra lens very well. The contents fit snug and are protected adequately. It also has room for manuals, chargers, cables, etc. I would purchase again for other cameras.

Great camera at a great price

by Jon Looy from Kentucky on 2010-09-10
I’ve been using this camera for a couple months now and I love it. Image Stabilization is a new thing for me. Needless to say, this is the best camera I’ve ever owned. Takes great pictures. I’m not sure I’d pay what Amazon is asking for it. I got it for just over $100 which was a great deal.

worth the money

by new user from on 2010-09-09
It is a little bit bulkier than what I had hoped for… but it does take great pictures. It has many different scenes to choose from… very user friendly. I feel like it is well worth the money… especially if you buy it used.

easy to use

by Sarah23 from on 2010-09-08
This camera is fun and easy to use. great for everyday pictures or quick videos. Just do not drop it because it will brake. Otherwise if you are not a professional photographer and just want to take some fun pictures and maybe add some accent colors or have fun making the sky pink and your dog blue then this is the camera for you.

Canon PowerShot – Great small camera

by Palma Beckett from ALPINE, TEXAS, US on 2010-09-06
I bought this camera a month ago and have enjoyed the ease of use and clarity of photos since the 1st shot.

This compact and lightweight EF 75-300mm telephoto zoom lens is ideal for shooting sports, portraits, and wildlife. The lens is distinguished by a newly developed micro ultra-sonic monitor (USM) that makes autofocusing quicker and quieter, along with an improved zoom mechanism that includes a silver ring on the front for a luxurious touch. The micro USM makes this version of the lens particularly suitable for applications that require a fast autofocus, such as sporting events or wildlife shoots. It Does The Job!

by Bruce Fields from New York, New York USA on 2010-08-07
I recently got into birding and bought a high end pair of binoculars which provide awesome views. Identifying the birds I encounter takes time to learn and remembering the details for what you see and then going through a field guide to find them can be very tricky. Consequently, I quickly decided I need a longer lens than the 135 I owned, and decided that 300mm would work well enough(although who wouldn’t want the Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM for a measly $6000 if given half the chance?).

Since I wasn’t looking to create fine art but simply wanted a clear representation of what I was looking at, I decided an economic lens would be sufficient. My other lenses are all red circles but in this case I felt it would not be necessary to drop a bundle to achieve what I need to achieve, so I bought the 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM. I was not disappointed. For the extremely cheap price I put out, I got a lens which focused easily and quickly on my 5D. I don’t know why some people say that it focuses slowly, but that is not my experience. Hand holding the lens I soon discovered that I had to run the ISO up to get quicker shutter speeds, since extreme sharpness was not happening. That helped, but images were still soft in the shade. A tripod and using A-Servo focus helped considerably.

In good sunlight when I can use a middle level ISO, like 400 – 800, and get shutter speeds over 1/300th, using a tripod, I find that the results are quite nice, better than you might expect from a lens of this price. In less optimum conditions there is the higher ISO and lower shutter speed to deal with, so if the bird isn’t very very still it is unlikely to get jaw dropping sharpness. However, when all is said and done, what I do get is more than sufficient to provide me with all the information I need to make an identification. And sometimes, I am surprised to see a really lovely, nicely sharp photo emerge.

The lens is lightweight, easy to carry around, seems very happy with my 5D (working smoothly, focusing quickly) and even looks pretty nice :-). I say it does the job well and gets 5 stars not because it is as good as its high end cousins, but because it is what it is expected to be, exactly and with no argument. I don’t expect that any other lens in this price range will perform as well for me as this one does.

Cannon Lens DF 75-300 excellent

The cannon lens EF 75-300 is an excellent buy. I search all over for the best price and this was it. I am not disappointed. It is easy to use and is exactly what I wanted. Eventually I would like a more powerful lens but this lens is great for anyone interested in taking great closeups. Thanks

A Fantastic Lens for the Price

by S. N. Mayfield from Eugene, OR USA on 2010-01-10
I didn’t buy this lens from Amazon but I do own it. It’s a great telephoto lens and I’ve been really happy with the picture quality. My only gripe is that I wish it had a stabilizer. Even with that’s only slightly dim, like that of a cloudy day for example, causes the photos to sometimes be blurred because the lens is long and heavy, so small movement can cause blurring. It isn’t impossible to use without a tripod, though. It’s an extremely good lens for the price, that’s for sure. Overall I’m very satisfied with it!

The lens was everything I had hoped it would be. I take pictures of my kids’ soccer games. It allows me to get up close and personal and gives me great action shots.
