Hdv: The Latest From Sony

Even though you may think high definition video is just for your television, it isn’t. You can get that very same quality on your home movies as well. You can turn your home movies and precious memories into works of art with HD.

Amateur home video producers alike will truly love the high quality of HD. With HDV (high definition video), you can record superb high definition video onto a digital video tape.

Benefits of HDV

You don’t really need to understand how HDV works to truly appreciate the benefits. All you need to do is spend a few minutes watching a video recorded on a Sony HDV video camera and you’ll see everything you need to know.

If you already know about HDV, there are many more reasons as to why you should pick HDV video cameras:

1. The amazing picture quality of HD is no longer limited to Hollywood and professionals. You too can now use HDV technology to capture the important memories of your life with life like color, vivid contrast, and amazing HD video.

2. HDV recording offers low noise, high accuracy, rich, and very vivid color.

3. The sound tracks for HDV use MPEG 1 audio layer 2 digital encoding to give your videos the sound quality of CDs at a much lower bitrate.

4. HDV uses the same tapes that are already popular for DV recording, with the recording time being the same as well.

5. HDV also uses MPEG 2 compression, which is used in digital broadcasts and also DVDs.

6. HDV uses a higher compression rate than DV, making it more reliable and less subjectible to errors.

Technology behind HDV

The HDV format handles the same bitrate as the DV format, although HDV records a high definition signal. This will allow you to record HD video on the same tapes used for DV recordings. A signal with HDV has 4.5 times as much data as a DV signal used with NTSC. HDV also includes CD quality sound, MPEG 2 compression, real time encoding, and so much more.

When compared to other HD formats, HDV is one of the best, if not the best. Sony has always been known for quality, which makes HDV no exception to the rule. This format has been years in the making, which helps to make it what it is today.

If you’ve been looking for the perfect type of video camera, rest assured that HDV is it. If you buy a Sony HDV type camera, you’ll know that your precious memories will be perfect HD quality – each and every time.

its not too bad i guess

by rob12770 from on 2010-07-10
to be fair..i havent used it much, but my innitial impressions are that im a bit dissapointed with it, its drag is TOO fixed, it dosent go slack enough, there is no side tilt like you get on still cam head, meaning you have to fart about with the legs on uneven ground..not sure if id recommend it, the pan is fairly smooth, but not perfect, i dont like the daft knob to control the drag..i say “control” in the loosest terms, as there is very little control .. i dont like the plate release system, its awkward, i prefer the giotoss quick release..
i thought manfrotto was meant to be the best.. now that i have one, i dont think it is.
also, does anyone have any idea what the allen key screw under the head joint on the left hand side is for as there is no mention of it in the feeble instructions ? what does it adjust ?
i would not recommend this head.
im using it with a panasonic hdc-sd700.

Pan tilt head for my Canon 5D Mk 2 camera adapted well to an old Gitzo 525 Rapid tripod formerly used with 4×5 view camera. Tilt Knob on side and pan lever both work well to dampen the movements when needed. This is a Video pan head and does not allow 90º vertical mounting for still vertical needs on the HD DSLR Canon 5D Mk 2. Good Value for my needs.

Very smooth for both panning and tilting.

by PX from on 2010-05-10
The 701HDV was as smooth as I hoped it would be. It is also lightweight and compact. The feature set is well thought out: Sliding, adjustable mounting plate, left and right rosettes for either side handle.
Good buy for the money. I’d say it lives up to its claims.

Value for the Price

by Frank Casanova from Sacramento, CA on 2010-03-03
As a professional Videographer for over 30 years, I have used numerous makes of tripods and pan heads. While clearly not the best, the Manfrotto products have been the economical workhorses of the industry. It’s a bit better than a case of “you get what you pay for”. When the top end pro tripods and pan heads are priced at what you’d pay for a used car, the Manfrotto products are extremely affordable…and relatively durable. They tend to be heavy, but that’s part of the trade-off in the “price vs. performance” area. While I don’t use Manfrotto (Bogen) equipment for my important projects, I can have many of them in use when the project calls for simple everyday camera support that won’t require precision camera movement. The heads work smoothly and last a reasonable time. Certainly better than the cheap still photography equipment.

best small, truly fluid head tripod

by Averan from on 2010-01-09
bought this to use with the Panasonic HMC150.
the bogen 701hdv is rated for 3lbs and the hmc150 weighs around 4lbs so the internal spring in the tripod head isn’t strong enough to return the camera to level after tilting down/up,
would need to get the 501 for that,
but the head is nice and compact which is great for travel or carrying around a lot.
and it is truly super smooth fluid action!

i was using the velbon dv7000 which just couldn’t handle the hmc150’s weight at all.
the 701 is like a dream!
if you haven’t been willing to spend more than $100 on a tripod, i can speak from experience when i say that it is the single best small investment you can make if you are serious about getting smooth professional shots with pans and tilts.

and i know this head will be perfect for the Panasonic GH1 or Canon 7D when i’m ready to add dslrs to my camera collection.

very good, dependable, really heavy

by L. Jaramillo from Edinburg, TX on 2010-01-19
it is a very good tripod, however it is kind of difficult to set up at first. Now I’m getting used to it. The head works smoothly and since it is very strong, I can work with confidence that my canon xh a1 won’t fall. Now I just need a dolly, but not sure to go for the manfrotto, as the price tag is kind of scary.

Disappointed

by Island Girl from Florida on 2009-08-03
We bought this tripod to use at shoots requiring a third camera after reading it’s good reviews. Unfortunately the spreader broke while setting up the second time we used it! The tripod is also very heavy and not very user friendly.
Manfrotto however were very quick to replace the broken item.
We have always used Miller tripods in the past which have proved excellent, light and extremely strong. We now wish we had spent the extra money on another Miller tripod.

great tripod

by James D. Buchanan from memphis tn on 2009-06-28
I love this tripod, unfortunately the first outing to use it was on a boat on a river and the nice case it comes with blew out never to be seen again. Bummer. On a moving boat generally is not the best time to give it the first test but I got great images. Anyone know where I can get a new case for a good price?:)

Sticking with MiniDV

by EJ from on 2010-07-19
I read all the reviews on this camcorder before buying it. I like the MiniDV format. I have a lot of tapes and would like to read them to disk in the near future. I like recording stuff from other analog sources. I am not going to write everything everyone else already wrote. I LOVE THIS CAMCORDER! The best thing I can say about it is that my technology-averse wife picked it up, recorded some video in a darkly lit room, and the video looks great. She is happy and so am I. The quality drops at a certain darkness but overall, the quality of the video is great and the camcorder is easy to use. If you are anything other than a professional videographer, this is the camcorder for you.

Does what promised

by Roberta Silverstein from Novato, CA, US on 2010-07-12
The Canon VixiaHV40 is an excellent high performance HD camcorder.
While not the easiest to use at first, it provides a quality typically found in higher end cameras. According to a friend of mine who is a cameraman, this is the same camera used by Reality Shows.

The shipper was great and very timely. Delivered on time and in great condition for a used camera.

The miniSD was a challenge to find in brick/mortar stores. Go online for both the SD Card and the DVDtapes.

Excellent camera for streaming

by jaclynn from Landenberg, PA USA on 2010-06-22
Bought this to stream a live event through a macbook. Worked great! Picture was clear even in a dark, candlelit church. Had trouble streaming both video and audio through the firewire port, but otherwise the audio worked well in regular filming.

Great portable video camera

by D. Waugh from Kingston, Jamaica on 2010-05-30
Great video quality, 1080i resolution, still camera not very good but does the job if you have good lighting. Only 3 mega pixel camera. All in all a very good afordable video camera(Canon Vixia HV40) Five Stars.

Disappointed that I cannot play old PAL movies

by JP from Costa Rica on 2010-04-17
In 2007 I bought an HV20 that is not any more in my posession. I bought the HV40 mainly because I thought that I could view with it also my old tapes recorded in HDTV with the HV20. Unfortunately I had to recognize that this does not work as the HV20 was in PAL format whereas the HV40 is rcording in NTSC. Big disappointment and had I known this before I had gone right away for a tapeless camera type. One assumes that in HDTV the difference between PAL and NTSC does not any more play a role. Producer and Amazon should on their pages warn the consumer that it does so and should also make it clear by offering both versions!

Drop Dead, Kick Ass

by G. Mercado from South Florida, USA on 2010-05-13
I run and own one of Florida’s most reputable paranormal teams “Team Phenomenon | Paranormal Bad Boys TV” and we need to high quality footage for our films. I looked at many other cameras but the XHA1s was by far the clearest in resolution. This camera is a snap to work with and the overall quality makes it worth the money. This is one of our main cameras we use for production of our films, videos and documentaries and if I could I would buy a second in a heart beat as backup. The camera battery life is exceptionally good and the features give your video that clear HD eye candy you want. This is the independent film makers top choice of cameras and I can get why, I simply call it an Orgasm in a box. because that is how you feel when you first get it in the mail.

My only two cons is that the front microphone head is kinda wobbly and it doesn’t shoot to hard drive, Digitizing tapes can put extra stress on the heads. An hour long HDV tape equals to 12GB of hard drive storage so make sure you have an extra 1.5TB of external HD backup for your projects and never overwrite the original tapes. I buy my HDV tapes from Walmart which are 6 for $20 and work beautifully.

Awesome!

by G. Conrad from North Hollywood, CA USA on 2010-04-25
As others have noted, this camera is not for the casual videographer or the faint of heart. But, if you’re looking for a superb prosumer camcorder, this is it. Packed with features, a great value for the price, with awesome video quality. Highly recommended.

Fabulous. Wonderful. Great!

by Julie S.C.Y, from on 2009-10-11
I love this camera. If you don’t have a lot of experience with prosumer cameras (as in my case), the first look may be a bit intimidating (a friend said, “It looks like you’re filming tv news”). Especially as I added a Rode shotgun mike (not sure it does anything other than make the sound louder, but…still checking it out).

You can’t rest the camera on your shoulder, but the image stabilizer helps and the grip and buttons are all well designed and easy to reach. I struggled through the manual, but fortunately bought Dan Curran’s dvd about the xh-a1 which appears to be almost identical. This was a -huge- help. I can’t recommend it enough if you are at all unsure of what you’re looking at. He goes through the simplest things (putting the shoulder strap on) to some very technical settings that you can do. The dvd saved me -so much- learning time and also prevented some careless mistakes (like letting sunlight through the viewfinder).

This camera feels like a terrific tool that can do whatever you need and the picture quality–even on Auto–is beautiful. Having the two XLR terminals will make a big difference, too. The versatility and design really meets such a variety of needs–way too much machine/expense for “home video” (it’s not the kind of camera people forget is pointing at them), but great if you want to shoot training films, web videos, independent films.

Technology has changed so much in the 20 years since I was in film school–and it’s still hard for me to believe that such a great camera, capable of such a quality product, is available for under $4000.

Very impressed. Highly recommended.

Great!

by A. Pitera from Michigan on 2009-09-14
I love this camcorder. I’m not particularly tech-savvy or a ‘pro’ (working on it) but after reading through the manual I am now able to do pretty much everything I want. The quality of the image is great, as is the price when you compare it to other HD camcorders available. It arrived really fast too.

Great Cam for Pros and Novices

by Michael Kern from Ketchikan, AK USA on 2009-09-08
This Canon cam has been a great investment to my company. It was easy to learn, fast to set up, and a pleasure to use; even when all the settings are on manual. All of the important controls are programmable hard buttons. Focus, Aperture, and zoom are all on the lens barrel for easy access. The picture is clear and the computer interface to the camera is a breeze. This is a real winner.

Good Tripod

by L. Stokes from City of Angels, CA on 2009-11-01
I originally had one of those horrible $30 tripods you get from Best Buy. It would never let you pan or tilt smoothly and eventually the leg locks would just give out under the weight of the DV camera. So to save my camera I bought this tripod. The difference (of coarse) is night and day. I love this tripod. Smooth tilts and pans and I can adjust the tension. The legs lock like they’re supposed to and the rubber feet give me some confidence about placing my sticks on various surfaces without damaging them or slipping. The one draw back would the spreaders. They just a little awkward when you’re in a rush to setup a low shot. But I can live with that. Ten points to Manfrotto from me on a good investment.

Smooth as glass

by Stanley MacDonald from South West Iowa on 2008-11-02
As a self employed videographer, my requirements are simple, the best product at the best price. The Manfrotto 351MVB2 with the 503HDV Pro Fluid Head from Amazon fill both requirements and let’s not forget about the really nice included padded carrying case. The tripod might be a little on the heavy side, but its rock solid construction makes it a super stable platform to operate from. The legs extend easily and leveling the half ball is accomplished in minimal time. The lighted level bubble is a very nice little feature for those times when shooting in low light. The spiked legs with two sets of shoes make this tripod an even better purchase. There is only one way to describe the 503HDV Pro Fluid Head, `smooth as glass’. Pan’s and tilt’s are smooth and effortless, rendering very professional end results. Mounting one of our Sony HVRZ7U’s is a snap with the supplied plate. The large and well placed knobs and locking screws make mounting, setting fluid control and counter balance quick and painless. For those who want a well built, easy to use tripod and head package, I strongly recommend this particular setup, its money well spent.

Best Video Head yet!

by Patrick J. Cassidy from on 2010-07-29
For all you people that say this head is sticky you need to read the instructions and learn how to use this head. The only time it sticks is if you use the lock down lever as a drag. If you use the drags properly this head has a smooth and reliable pan and tilt. I have had three Manfrotto heads and this one has been the best. I am using a 10LB Pro camera and this head is a dream to use. The handle is a bit big and it was hard mounting my LANC remote to it but it was done with little modification. I can set the camera 8FT in the air and adjust the handle down to a comfortable level to still pan and tilt comfortably. I would recommend this head to anyone but you would have to be 10% smarter than the head to use it.

Pretty cool and very smooth

by brandofan from California on 2010-07-22
Awesome. Had the 501. Got this for a heavier camera and I am impressed. Looks cooler too, because of the 503 HDV model.

Smooth – Very smooth – from 14 oz AVCHD to professional video

by HMMWV from santa clara, CA USA on 2010-02-05
This must be the most adjustable and free moving fluid head on the market. for tiny to mid size pro cameras (all the big stuff is obsolete now) it works fine. The head could hold a 40 lb camera, but nobody uses those any more in the field. Here are the important parts.

#1 pan fluid adjustment – this one is hidden – tilt the head down to 90 degrees like you want to shoot a copy of a document on the ground and lock it there. (set the return spring I mention later to OFF so that it does not fight you) The pan adjustment knob can be used with gloves on as it faces the ceiling once you tilt the camera down.

#2 tilt fluid adjustment – this is easier – the knob is on the left side is also clearly marked and multi-turn.

#3 zoom fluid adjustment – Heh. Just kidding ya. Gotta have some fun somewhere.

Both fluid adjustments are clearly marked as + to – and have several turns. I use this with a very lightweight carbon fiber tripod and at no time does it try and bend the tripod if the fluid adjustments are made correctly for the camera on top.

Both pan and tilt have BIG (again glove usable) levers for locking your settings if you want it held on a point, both of which unlock fast if the action starts.

The camera is a ’slide in’ plate design with a lens forward spring loaded stud, and both 1/4 and 3/8 screwsets on the slider. Storage is provided under the head for the unused screwset. A dime or a flat screwdriver is best to set these on the camera, then it slides in from the rear until it clicks. At that point, rotate the lock lever 180 degrees (again with gloves on if needed) and you are set to go. I’ve used it to hold audio equipment with the 3/8″ stud and video with the 1/4″ stud so it is nice to keep the unused one handy.

You can buy extra plates for other cameras for 20 bucks or so.

HINT – you may want to supply your own lockwasher so the screw doesn’t back out on you over years of use and suddenly you cant find it when you need it to hold an audio boom.

The handle is telescoping from 1/2 to full extension with a (again – gloved hand) unlock lever.

Finally there is a “return to level” spring. If I were forced to find fault with this head here is the one part that is a little weak. It has 4 detent settings “Off” 1, 2, and 3.

I use 2 or 3 with a 14 oz AVCHD camera. Now granted this is for return to level so it’s not super critical as you can tighten up the tilt fluid a bit – but its the only thing remotely wrong. Basically they are scaling the heads down for modern small cameras and it shows – but the quality has improved from the older bogen trademarked units. The reason I’m nitpicking here is that I use a setting of 2 or 3 with a camera that weighs less than a pound. My 3-ccd cameras need a 3+ setting or else I just add drag on the fluid knob for tilt but that is not the same as return to level. The control is opposite the tilt on the right side.

The lock to the tripod is a 3/8″ stud. I used a dab of oil on mine to make the threads engage properly as there was some manufacturing ‘gunk’ in the brass receiver. On my tripod I removed the 3/8″ screw and set it firmly with a locking nut on the head, then screwed the head onto the tripod.

Setup was fast, then adjusting to to the camera for equal tension in all direacions was easy.

CRITICAL PART: Instructions make no mention of you removing the insulator from the battery on the backlit bubble level I tried to get it to light up several times before pulling it out to go find a battery from my camera bag’s coin cell collection when I found the paper insulator – yank it and the backlit level is really bright (more later)

Anyone shooting with a modern 2000+ year camera will absolutely love this head. If you have a betacam laying around, its going to feel light.

Oh yes, for us southpaws out there the handle is ambidextrous and can be moved to the left side if you wish. And one last thing, the bubble level has a backlight for darkened rooms, press once for 10 seconds of light, hold down for more than a second and get 60 seconds. When replacing the battery press one side firmly until it clicks, then press the other side in until both sides click. My tripod has a level and compass set into the top of it where the legs come together and it agrees perfectly with the head’s level so they matched up perfectly.

I’d also mention when moving the handle for lefthand operation, it can also be re-aimed for right hand use with the same lever.

That’s it – I have not found a better tripod head for HDV systems. With the incredibly shrinking camera, this head weighs in at more than many cameras do, so a strong tripod is critical.

Good Tripod

Great camera bag for the Canon GL-2

by GP from Alabama, USA on 2010-01-14
I ordered this camera bag for a Canon GL-2. The bag is extremely well made, and it is very strong. It is surprisingly lightweight for such a large bag. The GL-2 fits perfectly, with plenty of room left for accessories, batteries, chargers, tapes, etc. It’s really the perfect size bag for hitting the road with a midsize camcorder.

I think it’s a little expensive compared with similar-quality bags I bought recently, but I bought it because it’s the perfect size and has quick access to the camera.

Definately recommended.

Great camcorder bag

by Cherian Koshy from Mpls, MN on 2009-12-05
I purchased this bag to keep my Canon XH-A1S safe and it’s a great fit. It has thick walls and interior compartments to keep mics, cords, and tapes handy. It’s definitely pricey but it’s great for taking the camera on a shoot with a good amount of gear. It’s not a hard case though so it’s important to avoid treating it too roughly.

Tough, Customizeable, Perfect for Prosumer Cameras

by Pablo Castro from Bogotá, Colombia on 2009-11-17
My Sony Z5U fits perfectly in this bag, all I have to do is disconnect the shotgun mike and place it facing backwards. I adjusted the padded separators so the camera is to one side, leaving space for the double battery charger, my headphones, and my Sony Alpha DSLR… with two additional SLR zoom lenses. And I can fit all the cables I need on the side pocket, plus an extra battery, and 7 Mini DV tapes. So you might conclude that you could get away with something smaller if you ONLY want to carry your 45 cm prosumer video camera, because this one easily fits a much larger camera if you eliminate the interior padded separators. In fact, I confess this bag was MUCH larger than I expected, but I love the way it is built and saw the positive side of its oversizing.

The only drawback I noticed: despite its really comfy shoulder strap, I packed it with so many things, now I can’t carry it for too long without feeling my shoulder is gonna snap. But I think that’s really my fault, not the bag’s, so it keeps its five stars.

Perfect fit

by Aaron C. Miller from on 2009-07-29
I just received my Kata CC-193 today and I couldn’t be more pleased! It’s a perfect fit for my Panasonic HMC-150 and all of it’s cables and accessories! I didn’t even have to use the front zippered pocket so there is still room for more.

The construction is VERY sturdy and seems like it will protect the camera very nicely. All in all I can say that I’m super happy with the purchase and it was definitely worth the $135 I spent on it.
