Digital Video Camera Flip

Is it ok to video record my college lectures/classes?
It’s my freshman year, Calculus teacher speaks reaaaallly fast (you wouldn’t even believe) and advanced Spanish teacher is from Colombia and speaks rapidly with an accent I’m not used to. Is it ok to use my flip video camera (small like a digital camera) to video my classes so I can view them later? Would that be a weird thing to do?
The camera would just sit on my desk. It wouldn’t be very noticeable. In a lecture hall it would be easier, but these are like 25 student classes. Should I not even ask?
You will need to get permission to record, whether video or just audio.
You could just ask your teachers to speak a little slower. Your calculus teacher may be nervous too and not realize that he/she is speaking too quickly for the class to take notes. It’s a common problem with new teachers especially. I’m sure he/she will not mind you asking (better to find out now than on evaluations at the end of the semester) and will in fact be glad to make such a small, simple change to help the class understand. Other students will appreciate it too.
The Spanish teacher might resist somewhat, but will probably be willing to at least slow down for the first couple weeks to let the class get used to her particular accent and to hearing Spanish again after a summer away from it. Either way, you will get used to the Columbian accent and it might be good for you to get used to hearing fast speech in an advanced class if you ever want to be able to understand native speakers talking at normal conversational speed.
I’d ask them first to slow down and only if that doesn’t work, ask to record them. It’d be better to understand them the first time anyway, right?
What is a Digital SLR Camera and How Does it Compare With a Digital Compact Camera?
The term digital SLR stands for single lens reflex. It is so called because the SLR cameras use a mirror that is placed behind the lens.
Although SLR cameras for capturing still images have been in use for quite some time, the ones that could capture both the stills and the videos were introduced in 2008.
Earlier the SLRs were used only by the professionals. They were not very common and were costly as well. The good news is that the digital SLRs are becoming cheaper as the time passes and coming within the easy reach of even the amateur photographers. You can buy an SLR at the price of a high end digital compact camera.
How does the digital SLR work?
When the light enters through the lens, it falls upon the mirror. The mirror, in turn, reflects (throws) the light upon the focusing screen. The light passing through the focusing screen falls upon a block of glass called pentaprism, which reflects the image that can be seen on the viewfinder. When you take a photo, the mirror flips up opening the shutter which exposes the digital sensor to light.
What- you- see- is- what- you- get photos
The SLR uses the viewfinder to compose the photo and adjust the focus. You can, thus, get the photo of the original as you see it on the lens.
SLR camera allows for a wide range of lenses with different focal lengths. You can change the lens whenever you like. This is what makes the SLR ideal for serious photography. Moreover, the image sensors of the digital SLRs are large and produce high quality photos.
Lightness and compactness vs. versatility and image quality
An attractive feature of the digital compact cameras is that they are cheap, light, compact and easily portable. You can just pop in the compact camera in your purse or pocket.
The SLRs are weighty and voluminous. Some of them are tank-sized for professionals. But they provide the invaluable advantage of accommodating a large range of lenses and accessories that were originally designed for film SLR cameras.
Of late, new generation light weight ultra compact DSLRs have also been introduced in the market. They have small lens and weigh around 20 oz / 0.5 Kg.
While the crispness and sharpness of the photos taken with the digital compact camera and SLR camera in broad day is by and large same, the SLR scores over the compact camera when you have to shoot in dim light or capture the fast running scenes of actions. This is because the SLRs have high sensitivity larger sensors.
Anti shake/vibration designs
The photos shot with non-SLR cameras in dim light or with long telephoto lenses may be blurred. The reason is that the camera gets shaken during the exposure. The SLRs are equipped with Image Stabilization (IS) systems that protect them from the impact of motion during exposure. Therefore, the photos shot with SLRs even in dim light or at long focal lengths are sharp and excellent.
Speed
What makes the SLR much superior to the compact camera is its speed in taking pictures, which makes it ideal for action photography as there is a zero lag time. Even the entry level SLRs shoot faster than the best compact cameras. So you can easily shoot both a sleeping and a running tiger with this camera.
Dust Removal mechanism
If you have to shoot in arid, dusty or even in humid and damp conditions, no camera can beat an SLR. They have inbuilt dust removal systems that keep the sensor clean. They have weatherproof seals and solid magnesium alloy cases.
High Definition (HD) videos for HDTVs
This is another advantage of SLRs over the compact cameras. They can shoot High Definition videos. They come equipped with HDMI ports which allow the camera to be directly connected to the TVs. You can view your videos on the TV.
So which camera should you buy?
It all depends upon your needs. If you want speed, exquisite professional looking photos even in dim light and more control over the photos and are not bothered about weight and volume, go for an SLR. If you are just an occasional photographer wishing to carry the camera in your pant pocket, you can buy a compact camera.

ReviewsDo not buy this tripod by Dutch from Nebraska on 2010-09-03 This tripod has one very limited use. Static shots on a flat surface. It will not work to follow action. Panning with this tripod is a disaster. Forget about tilting up or down. In short, it will not do what you’re hoping it will do, which is keep your shots steady when you’re actually using the camera. The readysteady is a much better option.
Great stand for the flip video! by Hoppaguy from San Diego on 2010-08-15 This tripod is a must if you own a flip video! With it’s flexible legs, you can basically put it anywhere and take a video from anywhere. We have been using our Flip video with tripod to video tape our tap dancing classes and the videos have been amazing!
Perfect little tripod by David Edmiston from So Cal on 2010-08-12 This is the perfect little tripod for the Flip line of cameras. It’s just as portable as the camera and easy to take with you. It’s flexible enough to make it simple to level the camera and sturdy enough that you don’t have to worry about knocking the camera over. You can even wrap the legs around certain rails and fences. It’s the PERFECT companion to the Flip cameras.
I returned the flip video becasue it would not record for more than a minute. It would then stop and go into step mode. by Ron NYC from on 2010-08-09 I return the flip Camera It was a very dissaointing experience It would not record for more than a minute and would switch into “Setup” mode I tried many times to see if I was doing something wrong I finally gave up and returned the camera
Don’t use with Flip by Bryan Wait from Denver, CO. on 2010-08-03 I recently bought a Flip Ultra HD which is nice except for the lack of image stabilization. So I figured a small tripod was in order. The problem with this product is that it is too flimsy to work with the Flip Video unit. The Flip makes this tripod much to top heavy which makes it topple over with even the slightest of vertical adjustments. Luckily it works fine for a small Sony cybershot that I have had for some time. If you are looking for a mini-tripod for any Flip Video recorder, I highly suggest you find one that is slightly larger and heavier to stabilize the Flip unit.

ReviewsWhat a Piece of CR……AP! by Mr. Harold D. Flynn from Seattle on 2010-09-06 I have a very expensive Cannon GL and it is great for staged video but I need a easy portable camera for quick video with the children. I had seen the FLIP at the store and decided to try it. What a joke….the quick start says it ships with a partial charge, well the first one didn’t so I took it back and got a second…it didn’t, so I got a third. It did start and I was alb eto set the menu. I then plugged it in to get it a full charge…and it never came back to life! took it back…4th would not start and 5th worked fine. Shot video with it and when I needed to charge it, plugged it into the computer and…it never worked again. Should not be this hard to charge or connect. DONT BUY THIS CAMERA!
Why release products with such major flaws?????? by Scott Graham from on 2010-09-03 Very disappointed with this product – it worked for about 2 minutes out of the box then has failed to charge. On reading online this is a widespread problem and one that has NOT been fixed with this model. The documentation is equally pathetic – the general consensus on how to fix this revolves around taking it apart – removing the battery pack – plugging it all back together when it starts to charge and then rinse and repeat until you get lucky. Not something you should really have to do with a brand new piece of kit. Cisco should do better than this……
Fragile, repair service costs. by Stanley J. Hasegawa from Edmonds, WA on 2010-09-01 I got a refurbished flip cam. the lens was defective. Per the seller’s website, it wouldn’t accept a return. I called tech support for Flip, said they would repair it for $70. I said it was under warranty. They told me to contact Amazon and the seller and return it. I emailed a private repair service, they said it wasn’t worth their labor cost to fix it. In the end, I did email the seller and seller agreed to accept a return. The whole process with Flip was disheartening, and you can Google various complaints about them.
Sucks by Nicole Cormier from on 2010-09-01 First time using the video camera, noticed the battery was already run down 1/4 of the way. Recorded maybe about 5 minutes of video and battery is basically dead already. Tried to re-charge, won’t charge. Awesome.
HD Mino 2nd Generation by Ronald Clark from on 2010-08-23 I like this!! Easy to use; Easy to Carry, Good quality shootings, and a good sound. Also, it looks good! I particularly like the ease of use while on the go-just point, shoot and move on!-no fumbling around trying to figure out features; it has good low lighting and really good day time video. I recommend it! Oh yeah! it’s not bulky-it’s almost “apple” like-it’s really classy looking. Feels like I have something really special.

ReviewsFabulous for Family by Mae Husted from on 2010-09-07 I LOVE this product. I am a very busy Mom with very busy kids. I took the camcorder out of the package and had it working in less than 5 minutes. It’s so easy to use, my 5 yeara old does self-recordings with it! Great product, great size, and great price. File transfer is super easy too. I have recommended this to friends and they have purchased it also.
easy! by spanky1 from on 2010-09-03 i am technically challenged and this is a breeze as a new Mom i can get it to operate really fast and catch a moment in a pinch!
Easy to use. Eats through batteries. by Jason Torchio from on 2010-08-30 Very easy to set up and use but I feel like I’m replacing the batteries a lot more frequently than I had anticipated, and I’m not using cheap $1 store batteries either.
Shaky Video by Dutch from Nebraska on 2010-08-30 The Flip is a wonderful camera — easy to use, extremely portable with good-looking video. The big problem is shaky video. It’s impossible to hold the camera still for more than a few seconds. I’ve solved the problem with a pocket-sized gizmo called the readysteady. I got it online.
Lightweight, Durable, VERY easy to operate, vivid pictures by Lacey B. from Austin, TX on 2010-08-30 The camera is what to be expected, good quality for the price. We took it snorkeling on two seperate occasions once in the Carribean and once off the coast of Mexico and also to a waterpark using the underwater case that is available to purchase. I love that it easily holds 2 hours of video, pretty good quality, I love that it so easy to connect to your computer. We have had it for a long time and still have not changed the batteries, which is amazing! Its a great camera for younger kids and teenagers who like capturing video. We use the Flip Video software and capture frame-by-frame photos from the videos once we download them to our computers, which is a great feature; however, the quality for these captured photos are not the same as you would get from a nice digital camera but still, really good. I think its a great price & good value!

ReviewsAwesome for water parks. by A. Schulz from on 2010-09-02 The case is just all around a great thing to have. Brought this w/ the fam for vacation at a water park and took video of my daughter on everthing. Got smaked around by some forceful amounts of water had no leaks very well made.
An inexpensive, no-brainer accessory for your Flip Camera by John Llama from 03784 on 2010-08-31 The Underwater case for the Flip UltraHD is a great accessory for the Flip camera, for anyone going to the beach, with a pool, or who just wants to goof around with underwater video. The case is watertight, lightweight and has a useful strap. It also works well in the ocean. I even bought one for my brother.
Great product! Works like a charm! by Lacey B. from Austin, TX on 2010-08-30 My husband &I have brought this underwater case with our Flip Video to Schliterbahn Waterpark on ALL the Waterslides, snorkeling in the Caribbean at Grand Cayman Islands, swimming casually in pools, swimming & rappelling down waterfalls, and snorkeling off the coast of Mexico at Majahuitas. The case helps protect the camera and does a great job underwater.
As advertised… by zrclshn from on 2010-08-27 I used this item snorkeling on our honeymoon in Mexico. It performed as it was advertised. I was able to take video (including video of a 5 foot barracuda) without any damage to the camera. Pros: Easy to use Does not leak Fits the camera perfectly Cons: Like all underwater camera cases … they float (kind of a pain when swimming down to see things on the bottom) Unknown: Did not do any scuba diving, so I cannot attest to it at any depths (I had it at maybe 14′ at the most)
Awesome product by waterlover from on 2010-08-25 Just came back from Cancun. By leaving my full size video camera home, I borrowed a Flip camera from my friend that, I am glad, came with this underwater case. My family had a wonderful time at Xel-Ha with many unforgettable videos. Thanks for the Flip and this underwater case. I am sure I will get one for myself.

Flip Video Action Tripod List Price: $24.99 Sale Price: $18.35 You save: $6.64 (27%) Eligible for free shipping! Availability: Usually ships in 24 hours Average Rating: DescriptionAction Tri-Pod stand for FLIP Video ReviewsNot so much an action tripod by southern boy from los angeles, ca on 2010-09-03 The word “action” in the name is misleading. I have strapped the tripod to my bike, my helmet, my arm, my bag, my rack, everything, and the picture is extremely jumpy and shaky. This seems like a great tripod for securing your camera to something that is stabilized, but it is far from being an “action” tripod. I ride my bike on roads and even on the smoothest asphalt, the image is jumpy. This could be a design flaw in the camera for not having some kind of internal stabilizer, but since this tripod is made by the same company that makes the camera you would think they would have somehow figured all of this out.
Works great has limits by Miles Gwyn from Las Vegas, NV on 2010-08-18 I really like this tripod, The action mount it is a lot bulkier than another version that flip had produced. The tripod legs make this harder to mount in tight spaces and the plastic bits don’t absorb shock at all so be careful if you want to use on something like a bike or skate board. For the price it is good and still versatile.
Shaky by stephenghowe from Frederick, MD USA on 2010-06-14 I’ve tried making videos with a bicycle helmet and a Flip Ultra. Using a little foam rubber between the helmet and the stand, I can strap down the base tightly. The plastic is flexy, Flips are elongated and don’t have image stabilization, so videos shake even when things are not particularly rough. VirtualDub and the Deshake plugin do a surprisingly good job of mitigating the shake and rolling shutter jello, although with reduced quality and black edges. I like the design, hopefully it will be improved: a little metal here and there would help. A Flip standing on top of a helmet looks terrible; the Amazon pictures artfully minimize this (by placing it at the front of the helmet, extending the arm downward, and photographing the edge, not the face, of the Flip).

Reviewsthe case won’t close with camcorder inside! by L. Ferrell from New Jersey on 2010-09-05 I was very disappointed. The camcorder had to be forced into the case, then the case wouldn’t shut. I sent it back. They were great about the return, though.
Fail by Underwater Fail from on 2010-08-31 Just got this. I have the Ultra HD camera black and chrome and it hardly fits in the case. I had to force it in there and its in there so tight that when I shut the case it pops open due to stretching the plastic. I had to use a fork to get my camera out of it. Not going to bring my camera underwater then have the case pop open. Once the camera was in the case the power switch doesnt work. I jumped back on Amazon to make sure I had the right one for my camera and it appears I do. I’m glad to see based on the reviews that the case has worked for some but I’m heading to cozumel in a couple weeks and there is no way I’m trusting my camera in this thing. very poor design. I’m better off using a zip lock bag. I think thats the plan.
Its Great unless you Scuba by SlickNick from Lancaster,CA USA on 2010-03-20 Well I went to southern Thailand and I wanted to record it so I bought an HD Flip and this case. Now if your going to be snorkeling or just dont want to ruin your flip its great. When you get to about 20 feet down it doesn’t work the pressure is too much for this case. What you have to do is press record on the surface and just record the whole thing and the zoom wont work that deep either and if it turns off your screwed, but for 30 bucks or whatever what can you expect. The good thing about it is I went down 30 feet twice and it still works ,but make sure you keep some wipes on you because the eye gets greasy from suntan oil and you have a bad picture. Ohh and be careful when you delete on flip software you might erase your entire vacation. But it’s a good excuse to take another one.
Just Okay by J. C. Whitford from Chicago, Illinois USA on 2010-03-08 This is a fine case if you intend to take above the water videos; however, as an underwater case it is nearly impossible to use. The viewing lens is at best difficult to see underwater…in fact, most of the time you’ll be seeing the reflection of the sun, or worse, you and your dive mask reflected by the casing. I attempted to use this case while sailing and snorkeling in the carribean during a two week trip and was never able to get any video that was worth viewing. I have a number of high end underwater cameras ( not video) and have captured some awesome stills so I do know what a good underwater camera is capable of doing. This case is definitely not in that category.
Worked great, no leaks! by Jessica K. Cecil from on 2010-02-14 I was worried about ordering this after reading all the reviews but I decided to take a chance. The case worked really well… No leaks at all!! The picture quality really wasn’t affected either! I would tell anyone to take a chance and get this. I did do the tissue test first and then when I put the Flip in the case I left it in throughout the whole trip so I didn’t have worry about getting the gasket dirty.

ReviewsWonderful camera but … by Dutch from Nebraska on 2010-09-07 The Flip is a great camera, but keeping it steady is an issue. I strongly recommend a decent tripod or, better yet, a pocket-sized gizmo called a readysteady.
Awesome little camera, but… by J. Troop from Glendale, AZ United States on 2010-09-02 I have had the Flip MinoHD for a little over a year now and it has been a great little camera. Although it does not feature any “steady-cam” capabilities like most larger camcorders, the picture quality is still great. Also, while I often wished the camera would have a greater zoom, it still did the job of getting closer than I could have to many events. Based on my experiences until yesterday (like I said, over a year of use), I would give the product five stars all the way. But… after I uploaded some video yesterday, I left the Flip plugged into the computer for charging, watched the white light blink for a few seconds and then started working on something else on the computer. About an hour later, my Mac shows me a window that says (basically), “Please don’t unplug peripherals until you eject them first.” It was referring to my Flip. I had not unplugged it, but it was no longer listed as a device. I unplugged it and tried to turn it on. Not a blink anywhere. Needless to say, after plugging it in various laptops and such, leaving it plugged in for hours at a time, checking the boards to see if anyone else had this problem (which many have) and trying every possible fix out there, I contacted their tech support via chat. The nice person confirmed that I had a dead Flip. Seriously? A year-old camera? It was just out of the warranty period so… tough luck. This is why I give the product two stars. I’m not alone in this. Look to see how many people have actually had to use their warranty to replace their Flips. Look to see how many people had these issues right after the warranty period. Yes, it’s a great camera, but only while it lasts. A $200 camera? Really?
Nice simple portable video camera by Cindy from on 2010-08-18 I got this camera to film my kids who are always doing something cute. The best thing about this video camera is the size and easy of use. I can very quickly pull it out and start filming. The price was right at under $200. The only issue is the battery life. If I take it on a trip and don’t have a computer top charge it, it seems to die before I even fill the memory. This is will some replaying. There is not way to charge it without USB, so if you are on vacation and don’t have your computer, it isn’t ideal. Besides that, I love this camera for how easy and affordable it is. It is in my pocket where ever I go when my kids are with me.
Flip is great while it last, then it’s over. by Carlos Aguilar from DFW, Texas USA on 2010-08-13 This is my second Flip Mino. It is the perfect mini-camcorder except for the fact that it cannot be serviced once the battery dies. Good thing I discovered the Square Trade warranty!
Two down in a year by M. W. Rasske from Seattle, WA on 2010-07-26 Bought this product for my wife as a birthday present. It died within three and half months. Sent it back to the company for a replacement – that went without a hitch. However…it has now died again – 12 months later. It won’t turn on . I have tried resetting it per customer service – to no avail… Time to try a different company.
