Watch a lot of older, classic movies and study them, from the silent era up ’til today. Watch all kinds of genres, foreign films, independent features, and search out the rare and unconventional. You’ll have to do a lot of research. Rent everything released by The Criterion Collection, as they excel in these types of movies. Study the works of directors like F. W. Murnau, Sergei Eisenstein, Charlie Chaplin, Fritz Lang, Orson Welles, John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Jean Renoir, Jean-Luc Godard, Akira Kurosawa, Vitorio De Sica, and Stanely Kubrick, because they were all influential and many modern day directors have stolen from their work. (Most directors have a vast knowledge of older films to draw upon. Just listen to Martin Scorsese, Steven Speilberg or Quentin Tarantino speak sometime.)
Read books about film, such as “The Five C’s of Cinematography,” “Good Scripts, Bad Scripts,” and “Setting the Scene” for example.
Take a photography class as a cheap way to learn composition, and the technical aspect of lenses. Stanley Kubrick used to be a photographer before he became a film director.
Enroll at the University of Southern California (USC). They have an excellent film school (called the “School of Cinematic Arts”), and such alumni as George Lucas, Judd Apatow, Ron Howard, Sam Peckinpaw, and Robert Zemekis.
