Nvidia Optimus Unveiled: Switchable Laptop Graphics On The Fly
Some ideas are so obvious that when he announced, one is the first reaction is to ask: "Wait, no longer doing that?" Such is the case of laptops with integrated graphics and discrete processors, and Nvidia's new system to play with them, called Optimus.
Common sense states that laptops with discrete GPUs both a standard and integrated graphics should be able to switch between the two at will. Unfortunately, so far, this requires one to manually flip a switch to turn on or off the GPU. Sometimes it is a switch software, sometimes a real physical switch on the laptop. This kludgey system presents many problems. First, we must remember to select the GPU before to launch a game or other graphics-intensive task, and again after off (or the risk of killing the battery). Second, users do not even incorporate many know they have switchable graphics, and just leave the GPU permanently turned on or off, defeating the whole purpose.
Some laptops label the two modes with the names of course, as "high yield" or "better battery life, it does not really explain exactly what 're doing when you select the mode. Worse, some laptops require you to close all applications and connect to switch modes (we're looking at, the MacBook Pro).

The concept is simple, the system uses integrated graphics card, and when it launches an application that requires the GPU, is changed to perfection, then turns off when no longer needed.
This seems so obvious, one might wonder why we had to manually switch graphic modes in the first place. Nvidia claims that it was an issue with both integrated and discrete graphics share a multiplexer (or MUX) connected to the monitor, making it impossible to switch on the fly. The solution Optimus is the path of dedicated GPU graphics output through the IGP integrated graphics chip, so there is only one connection point between the two graphs systems and display.
Our test system, a UL50 Asus includes a testing tool in the form of a popup window that indicates when the discrete graphics GeForce G210M were in or off. When launching a game or play a video file in high definition, we could see the indicator turn on the GPU, which shows that the system had changed in the most powerful, but more power-hungry graphics mode. In real world terms, that means I could get more 70 frames per second in our Unreal test Toumament III in 1366 x 768, while also getting nearly six hours of battery life playing video of our test battery discharge.
Optimus system change control its own default, and Nvidia drivers keep An updated list of preferred settings for applications and games – but can also set their own preferences to override the default if necessary, or set preferences for a program of the Nvidia control panel does not recognize.
In using an Optimus-powered laptops, the technology worked as advertised, ie I had never noticed in the action if not sought. Excellent camera. Ok accessories… by Michael Morse from on 2010-05-21 Really, I just bought this package for the hvr-hd1000u because it was one of the better deals on the web with some accessories thrown into the mix as well. The camera itself is a very sturdy, clear camera that records in glorious HD. Also, some of the accessories are pretty good for a cheap compilation. However, I can’t say the same for some of the other accessories like the video light, which is so dim it doesn’t really help in any situation. Also, the ad said something about an additional battery that just wasn’t there (though I heard from another review on this seller, that their third-party batteries are fire hazards so I should probably be thankful for that absence). Given that, I probably wouldn’t touch the battery charger… Also, I’m confused as to why they only included dv’s for an hdv camcorder. They’re a decent quality but not at all HD. Overall, this is a great buy given the price is cheaper than what most retailers would charge for the camera alone. At the same time, I wouldn’t put too much faith into the accessories (the exceptions being the memory card with its reader, the filters, the large tripod, the cleaning kit, and the cases).
