What is a cheap, high quality camcorder?
I want to buy a camcorder to make some short films? I can only spend about $300. I want it to be HD and have the cinematic look with 24 fps. It needs to have manual focus. It needs to be compatible with a mac as well. I saw the canon hv 20, 30, and 40s but they’re too expensive.

What specs on a camcorder affect it’s fps?
I want to get an HD camcorder that is around $500. I found a few good ones but I want to use it mostly for filming skateboarding so I need one with a good amount of frames per second. Basically if I were to shop on, say bestbuy.com, what is the spec that reflects fps and what is a good one vs. a bad one? thanks.
Typically, low-end camcorders will capture video at 29.97 frames per second. You will commonly see this as 30 frames per second. Sometimes you will see this as 60 fps – but there is interlacing going on, and it ends up being 30 fps.
When looking for a camera or camcorder that has really fast frame capture rates for slo motion playback at regular speeds, you will be looking for 120 fps or faster. For example, there are some Sony consumer camcorders (HDR-CX500 series) that have a feature called “SmoothSlowRecord”. This is a 3 second burst of 120 frames per second captiore that results in a 12 second playback at 30 fps.
The only other cameras or camcorders – in my opinion – worth looking at that can come close to this are some of the Casio Exilim series cameras that have high fps capture capabilities. After this, you jump to the high speed cameras like the ones from Vision Research or Phantom.
If you end up staying with a “regular” consumer grade, 30 fps camera or camcorder, you can use the slow playback feature in your video editor to slow the playback. I have found that you can drip to about 15 fps and it still looks smooth. Below this and it starts to get jerky on playback. So basically, 4 seconds at 30 fps played back at 1/2 speed or a resulting 8 second playback timeframe.
