Flip Camcorder USB Cable Problems

by S. Taylor from on 2010-08-01
Simply put: the claim on the packaging of the Flip Video 3-Pack USB Cables states that it is designed for all Flip Video Camcorders. I have a Flip Mino HD Camcorder (2nd Generation) and the USB cables do not fit onto the Flip Camcorder's USB Arm. I tried to fit all three USB Cables onto my Flip and none of them fit. I'm going to be returning this product immediately, and I hope I can find a simple generic male-female USB Cable that will work with my Flip Mino HD Camcorder. Generally, Linksys covers all of its bases with regard to making innovative, easy to use, and practical devices for the typical electronics consumer. This time they made a great camcorder, but their USB Cable Accessory that was designed to connect the Flip Camcorder to a computer to either upload video or recharge the Flip Camcorder's Internal Battery fails to do it's job, because the USB Cables simply won't fit onto the Flip Mino HD Camcorder's USB Arm. Ironically, the end of the USB Cable will go into the computer, but the end that is supposed to snap onto the camcorder does not.

If you don't take long videos, and don't save hours worth of videos on your flip camcorder you can probably get away with sticking the camcorders arm directly into your computers USB port, as you hold the camcorder, from sagging, while the video uploads to your hard drive. However, if you aren't inclined to upload every single little video you create - and you indeed save an hours worth of video before you upload it to your hard drive - then I would make sure you have a strong wrist and shoulder because you'll have to hold/support the camcorder while it uploads it's video from the camcorder's USB Arm to your hard drive. Why do I say that you need a strong shoulder and wrist? Well, although the Flip Camcorders are light, they aren't light enough to support the gravity pull when you plug the USB Arm of the Flip Camcorder into your computer's USB Port. If you put your Flip Camcorder's USB Arm into your computer you will notice a gravity sag: meaning, you'll see the camcorder tilt downwards as the camcorder's arm tenuously holds itself into your computer's USB Port. This gravity sag ultimately means that there will be enough of a gravity tug over time to ruin the structural integrity of either your computer's USB Port, or the Flip Camcorder's USB Arm - or both.

Bottom lining it: The Flip Camcorder is a great product, but the Flip USB Cables won't fit onto my Flip HD Mino Camcorder's USB Arm. The package states that the Flip USB Cables will fit all Flip Video Camcorders, but they don't fit on mine.

I have to agree...

by Deborah from on 2010-07-03
these do not fit the Flip camera. I read the reviews and was torn about buying these, but after trying them my suggestion is don't waste your time or money ---they simply DO NOT FIT. I will be returning them.

what's the point?

by R. Perrone from Central NJ, USA on 2010-05-26
i don't really get the point of a 3-pack of these. i only needed on for my flip but couldn't find a single package. seems kinda silly but at least i get to match the color cord i use to my mood? i don't know.

The cable that should come with the camera.

by Shopper from Cordova, TN on 2010-05-14
I was disappointed to not have one of the these cables with my flip camera! I ordered these - good price - and they work great. I would have been just as happy with just one cable, though. This has one long and two short cables that can be linked together if you need one very long cable. Good thing is that they work with other USB devices, so maybe they are not wasted!

If you're on the fence about buying, read this first!

by J. Harley from Willow Grove, Pennsylvania United States on 2010-04-30
When considering purchasing these cables, I saw that the reviews were mixed, with some people saying they fit and a lot saying they don't. That put me in a bind because I really wanted to buy them because of the colors, but not if they are poorly made. I figured a net cost of $5 per cable wasn't a bad investment. Hoping the cables were improved and the Gen 2 Mino would fare better, I took a chance and I bought them. Big mistake. I tried them on the Flip Mino Gen 2 and it was too tight a fit. I refused to force the Flip's connector into the female end, so I decided to try a USB thumb drive instead. It took some serious muscle to finally jam the drive into the connector. I immediately realized there is no way I'm going to exert that much pressure on the Flip connector and risk snapping or bending it. If a cable takes that much effort simply to connect, obviously something is wrong. The cables were immediately returned and I'm just going to buy a couple more of the Amazon brand USB 2.0 extension cables. It fits and works fine, the price is right, and I strongly recommend getting a few of those over these. So, if you're on the fence like I was, these cables are still a poor fit and still require excessive force to insert. Yes, they'll eventually work after being forced on, but do you really want to stress the USB port of your Flip or other USB device that much?

Wonderful camera but ...

by Dutch from Nebraska on 2010-09-07
The Flip is a great camera, but keeping it steady is an issue. I strongly recommend a decent tripod or, better yet, a pocket-sized gizmo called a readysteady.

Awesome little camera, but...

by J. Troop from Glendale, AZ United States on 2010-09-02
I have had the Flip MinoHD for a little over a year now and it has been a great little camera. Although it does not feature any "steady-cam" capabilities like most larger camcorders, the picture quality is still great. Also, while I often wished the camera would have a greater zoom, it still did the job of getting closer than I could have to many events. Based on my experiences until yesterday (like I said, over a year of use), I would give the product five stars all the way.

But... after I uploaded some video yesterday, I left the Flip plugged into the computer for charging, watched the white light blink for a few seconds and then started working on something else on the computer. About an hour later, my Mac shows me a window that says (basically), "Please don't unplug peripherals until you eject them first." It was referring to my Flip. I had not unplugged it, but it was no longer listed as a device. I unplugged it and tried to turn it on. Not a blink anywhere. Needless to say, after plugging it in various laptops and such, leaving it plugged in for hours at a time, checking the boards to see if anyone else had this problem (which many have) and trying every possible fix out there, I contacted their tech support via chat. The nice person confirmed that I had a dead Flip.

Seriously? A year-old camera? It was just out of the warranty period so... tough luck.

This is why I give the product two stars. I'm not alone in this. Look to see how many people have actually had to use their warranty to replace their Flips. Look to see how many people had these issues right after the warranty period. Yes, it's a great camera, but only while it lasts.

A $200 camera? Really?

Nice simple portable video camera

by Cindy from on 2010-08-18
I got this camera to film my kids who are always doing something cute. The best thing about this video camera is the size and easy of use. I can very quickly pull it out and start filming. The price was right at under $200.

The only issue is the battery life. If I take it on a trip and don't have a computer top charge it, it seems to die before I even fill the memory. This is will some replaying. There is not way to charge it without USB, so if you are on vacation and don't have your computer, it isn't ideal.

Besides that, I love this camera for how easy and affordable it is. It is in my pocket where ever I go when my kids are with me.

Flip is great while it last, then it's over.

by Carlos Aguilar from DFW, Texas USA on 2010-08-13
This is my second Flip Mino. It is the perfect mini-camcorder except for the fact that it cannot be serviced once the battery dies. Good thing I discovered the Square Trade warranty!

Two down in a year

by M. W. Rasske from Seattle, WA on 2010-07-26
Bought this product for my wife as a birthday present. It died within three and half months. Sent it back to the company for a replacement - that went without a hitch. However...it has now died again - 12 months later. It won't turn on . I have tried resetting it per customer service - to no avail... Time to try a different company.

Please Read: Battery Issues

by GZ from on 2010-08-03
I would call this a 'toy camcorder'. One is not able to adjust settings in any significant way; there is no optical zoom, the video quality is so-so etc. If you are seriously interested in the UltraHD, you are probably already aware of these issues. If ease of use is your main criteria then this unit may be for you.

If you plan on buying this be aware that many people including myself have had major issues with the 're-chargeable' batteries. I went through two sets of batteries and used a Flip charger without registering a proper charge. It is easy enough to use standard AA batteries with the camera. You can also buy rechargeable batteries, but you'll have to charge these externally.

Pass On This Item

by Diego Raigoza Nuñez from Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico on 2010-07-26
At first glance the Flip Battery Pack may seem like a good item to get along with your new Flip videocamera, but take my word for it, it's not.

The original idea and intent of being able to charge your camera's batteries with your computer while on the go or while downloading videos to your computer is a good one, the execution of such idea was poorly done.

Unfortunately, this product suffers due to the design flaws of the Flip videocamera (In my case I own the Flip Ultra HD) and flaws of the battery itself.

The battery is a pair of Ni-Mh AA batteries wrapped together in plastic along with a proprietary pair of edges on the top that lock the battery in place inside the camera. While this is good, it also means you can not charge the battery pack OFF the camera. It has to be inside the camera no matter what.

One huge flaw of this battery is the required charging time; 6 hours. This wouldn't be too much of a problem if I could charge it on any battery recharger, but since you can't do that, you got to stick the battery in the camera and the camera to the USB port of your computer and HOPE it charges.

The problem here is that unless you work 12 hours a day on your computer or the computer is on 24/7, you will never be able to sit there long enough to charge the battery completely. You could try leaving the computer on for 6 hours doing nothing so the battery can recharge, but I find that a colossal waste of energy and a huge crime against the environment.

But wait, here comes the icky part...

Even if you sit there for 6 hours or you leave the computer on so the battery recharges, there is NO WAY to guarantee that will happen.

Why not? Because the camera overheats at some point and cancels the recharge (I'm guessing so the camera and the battery won't explode). The infamous overheating problem that most of us Flip users suffer from is NOT a battery problem, its a camera problem.

I've got two pairs of these battery packs and more than once I've been charging one, the camera would stop charging after a short while due to heat. I would swap the batteries so the cold pair would charge, the camera wouldn't even think about it, it would still claim things are too hot. It was until the camera itself cooled off that would resume charging, but for me this mean: unplugging the camera from the computer and placing it under cool air or let it cool down on its own. This is just too much fuzz to charge a simple pair of batteries.

With that problem, this item is just as useless as DSLR battery that will last you for one shot.

Usually, I would charge the batteries by removing the lid that covers them and plugging the camera on some USB slot away from the netbook's fan, but since I live in a hot place as it is, the camera just won't charge for long.

I read in some reviews of this item to peel off the plastic on the bottom poles and that would take care of it. I did that with one pair and it didn't work, it is a camera problem.

After a concert I wanted to record turned into a disaster due to the fact that the batteries didn't charge completely and I had to keep switching between batteries, I decided to retire the two pairs I own of these type of battery packs.

Flip really screwed up here, they should have either made the batteries compatible with any battery charger or sell you a decent battery charger for these that you can plug to the wall. I know they got an external battery charger that goes into the wall socket, but it has to be on a very precise position to charge and the design is just not practial, it's so easy to knock off the wall.

My advice is to pass on this item and just buy a couple of pairs of rechargeable batteries (Energizer, Duracell, Eneloop) that you can charge in any charger. The recharging time will be shorter (even if it takes 6 hours, you can leave them charging at night and they will surely be charged by morning) and will be easier to do. Not to mention you won't have to waste as much energy as you need to do by leaving your computer on for 6 hours. Unless you live in a really cold place, you'll be lucky to be able to charge these batteries completely the way Flip wants you to. If you live in a cold place, do yourself and nature a favor and use a normal battery recharger with normal rechargeable batteries anyway. Nothing justifies the huge waste of resources that charging these batteries entail.

CAN ANYONE HELP?

by JCB from on 2010-08-21
I recently purchased the Kodak Zi6 after carefully reading reviews from several sources. Since this is my first camcorder purchase and use, I wanted something affordable, easy to use, and something that would produce decent videos since my use would mainly be personal.

The instructions are excellent--not technical and easy to follow, excellent diagrams, etc.

PROBLEM: The manual states that the AA Kodak batteries that were included would take 13 hours to charge. I put mine on the the charger (included with the package) around 6:00 p.m. last night and as of 7:30 p.m the next day, now, they are still charging!

**So that's 25.5 hours and still going strong!!**

Anyone have any suggestions? Should I try to contact Kodak or the company where I made the purchase to see if this is normal? I'm going to contact the place where I purchased it first, however, if anyone has any suggestions OR if anyone has had this experience, please let me know.

I read a couple of reviews that the batteries took too long to charge, but they never said HOW LONG!

So until this battery issue is resolved, I honestly cannot rate the product any higher. I believe I'll enjoy it once I get over this hurdle. Thanks.

Avoid Kodak and their poor excuse for customer service....if you want something that works.

by Stella Diletto from Brooklyn, NY on 2010-08-03
I bought this product as a Christmas present for my boyfriend and it worked for only a few months before we had to send it in to be repaired. For some reason it stopped turning on, batteries charged and all. The repair people sent it back saying it was fine...but it wasn't. I can't imagine they actually even looked at it as it still wouldn't turn on, and we ended up having to send it back 3 or 4 times...all with the same explanation and getting only the same response. Oddly enough, the serial number got switched at one point...you could tell they actually took off the sticker and replaced it with another. That would have been nice had it actually been a different camera or if somehow switching the sticker made it magically work...but it wasn't, and it didn't.

The last time before we sent it back we tried to reason with them and explain that it didn't make sense to keep sending it back and doing the same thing over when it didn't produce a solution, that they we obviously have a defective product and they should just send us a new one or give us our money back. Well, they wouldn't do that and just kept saying that it would not happen again and that they stand by their repair department. Of course the product came back from the repair place still not working.

The last call resulted in them saying that at this point the product was passed a grace period which we were never told about (though of course all this back and forth ate time away from our warranty), and the best they could do was give us a $25 discount on a Kodak product or repair. Um, really? A discount on two options that don't work? No thanks - I wouldn't take you up on that offer if you were PAYING me.

Looks like I'm not the only one who has had this problem as well...so do yourself a favor and buy a Flip or anything else. Even if it's more expensive it will be worth the time you save having a product that both works and doesn't put you through a year of back and forth with an infuriating customer call center.

AVOID - fatal flaws!

by A. Mandadi from Houston, TX United States on 2010-07-25
Mine suffers from the immediate-freeze problem that turns the device into the paperweight reported by so many other users, and while researching this on the internet, I discovered a blog post that claimed that ONLY Kodak-branded memory cards will work in the thing (at more than twice the cost of generic memory cards). So not only did Kodak reportedly do this lousy thing in restricting the functionality, they didn't even have the courtesy to inform buyers that they had to use only THEIR memory cards, thus sending us all on wild goose chases trying to find workarounds to the device freeze issue. IMHO, that is the definition of ultimate corporate nastiness. I wouldn't buy from Kodak at this point if they were the last manufacturers on earth.

A great, cheap alternative to Flip or Higher Kodaks

by sarah phifer from on 2010-05-31
I recently lost my Kodak 12 Megapixel Camera I owned, and I take many videos constantly, and finally ran in to some extra money to get a camcorder. With only a $100 budget, I went with the Kodak Zi6 for $60 off of craigslist. It had recieved positive reviews and decidedly was the right choice, and in that way it is. This camera is DEFINITELY portable- despite it's mild bulk (which I will talk about shortly), you can use it anywhere. Say your on the road all day, and your filming every second of it. You can interchange SD cards to store certain parts on and can record up to 10 HOURS of video on a 32GB SD Card- far more than any flash memory Flip or Vado camcorder has even come close to. It is also great that you can charge your main Kodak batteries, and at the same time use regular AA's. The quality of the camera is superb- 720p HD looks very good, and no Flip camera has the option of 60FPS, which makes things even better. The fact it can also take pictures is a relief too. The built in software is excellent too- easy uploads to Youtube! But of course I have my pet peevs about this camera. The still photo quality is terrible; even sub-par to my iPhone. Low lighting quality is horrible and winds are disasterous. Compared to about any other camcorder on the market, it is the bulkiest. But, aside of everything, my final thoughts:

Pros:
Small
Cheap
720P
HD Video Connection to TV
Ability to change Batteries and SD Cards up to 32GB
Built in Software
Still Pictures
Easy to use
60FPS Option

Cons:
Bulky
Terrible still shots
Terrible wind sounds
Horrible low lighting
Not the best quality

But, for far far less than any flip video is going to cost you, I give this camera a 4/5- not perfect, but for saving money, this is your camera.

Very Nice!

by Kelly Foley Sapio from on 2010-05-30
This is a very nice pocket camera. Saying that, you can't expect a lot more from it. It is very high quality and takes nice day to day video. It captures family events etc quite well. Although, the zoom is quite poor and it's not even worth using. The zoom is probably about 10mm, so this is clearly not a camera for sporting events. This is a fantastic camera for just videoing a vacation, family event, or trying to start up a YouTube channel. The quality is quite superb for its small size but it can get a little watercolory in the blazing sun. If things are blurry check the long side of the camera for the focus button it probably out of place (tyou just push it up or down for focusing on small objects or just a landscape). The battery life is fantastic and it's a great small size. I reccomend this!
