This is a camera. It's a video camera. At least that's what you think Panasonic expects when thinking about the Lumix higher profile in reach the market this year: the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3.
A 10.1 megapixel, 12x zoom popular upgrade Panasonic models TZ, the ZS3 (which maintains its original logo as TZ7 in some markets) combines the versatility of a long zoom compact camera with the option of capturing 720p HD video in any time, with the push of a button.
First, we got our hands on ZS3 pre-production for several months during the official launch event the camera, and a few hours shooting with the new model made clear that the ZS3 was similar to the TZ5 – just different. How different? Read on to find out …
CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN
Panasonic's newest compact long zoom, 10.1 megapixels ZS3 instantly to mind the venerable TZ-cameras Series it replaces. Panasonic is known for bold and rugged construction, industrial design esque in its flagship Lumix models, and in this sense, the breaks ZS3 nothing new.
From any distance, it would be very easy to confuse the new TZ5 model, but the size and weight reduction compared to previous Long-zoom Lumix models feel (and appreciated!) As soon as you pick the camera up. While retaining the solid feel of the TZ5 and all-metal, the lightest optical design and compact Panasonic and Leica allows its partners to squeeze more zoom range in less space.
In general, calls for a reduction ZS3 10 per cent in size compared with the TZ cameras, and although still a formidable model compared with many ultracompacts (not pocket as well), the ZS3 still slightly better marks in the competitive Canon SX200 compactness.
Ergonomics and controls
The surface area ZS3's grip and semi-cylindrical provide plenty of real estate for hanging on the camera comfortably. Typical camera for-a-agreement Lumix control groups basic camera functions – a four-way controller, dedicated a couple of buttons and button videos – within reach of your thumb, and even with large Extended camera lens, the balance was never a problem.
In designing the ZS3 be a "hybrid" model – also in the country were photos or videos – the design team ZS3 recognized that many users find video features the typical point and shoot with difficult access. Menus and modes
Panasonic was among the first to get the board with automatic recognition of scene, brought to the Lumix line through the Intelligent Auto manufacturer (or IA) shooting mode. A fast and competent auto detection system, the "Intelligent Scene Selector" part of the system of five parts from Panasonic IA automatically collects shot six presets (including a couple of specific ways of night) on the basis of conditions of the scene – and in general, does an admirable job to make a smart choice.
The intelligent integration "intelligent" selection of ISO, optical image stabilization, detection face, and Panasonic fast AF focusing system continued into the mix as well, including proved adept at responding to rapidly changing situations during our tests with ZS3 draft. There were a few notable misses (a couple of times, the camera went hunting several seconds to focus on the macro range when there was nothing to focus on), but for casual shooters – especially those who have long "Shadow People" – the combination of technologies AI works well enough to allow "set it and forget it" operation.
For those seeking more control, there is also an automatic mode the program (the funny thing called "Normal" Picture "setting). A scene mode provides access to a staggering of ZS3 of 27 presets situation, and a couple of my positions Scene allow the user to choose between the two favorites of this long list for quick access directly from the dial.
As noted above, no video capture mode separately. Videos are set via a separate tab in the main menu (or trademark Panasonic Quick Menu – heads a list of options that can be called via the Menu button P.), although as with images, you must be in normal state image to change the settings like white balance and AF mode.
Overall, the Panasonic user interface is nearly identical and relatively simple. That said, for a camera orientation casual shooters, I still feel like ZS3 offers almost too many options. Of the six modes of AF to page after page configuration of the image to a multitude of "smart" features (ISO, exposure, etc), menus offer a wealth ZS3 of whiz-bang for geeks, but can be much to qualify for novice users.
Display / Viewfinder
Panasonic landed quite the shock when there was a 3.0-inch 460,000 dots LCD for TZ cameras, and although we had some nits to pick and inconsistencies to solve this special exhibition in the past, the unity of our ZS3 was impeccable in the test. No wonder "White Out" phenomena such as we saw with some of the older models TZ here.
The color is fairly accurate, as is the contrast, although in both cases by side comparisons with our screens calibration screen showed ZS3 to be imparting some punchiness and vitality in general do not exist naturally Direct to print shots. However, the resolution sound approach makes it easier to judge with less zoom.
Like other Lumix models, sports ZS3 a handful of energy options on the screen, allowing you to manually increase the screen brightness for outdoor shooting, for example. With wide-angle viewing mode enabled, I had no trouble using the screen at all, but direct sunlight.
