Hitachi Camcorders

IFA 2007: Hitachi with their Blu-ray Disc Camcorder

I just purchased a Hitachi DVD / HDD camcorder?

But I lost the program, ImageMixer, who came with him. Now I have to get my team but I found no program that supports it. Anybody know of a program to let me upload from video cameras to my computer hard drive in a readable format film? It is not the DVD or DVD player. It's a combo so you can record Hard drive too. I want to load from the hard drive to my computer. Windows XP. DVD / player / burner, all works

Since I do not know what team you, a bit of a challenge to answer your question. We do now that the camcorder is based on DVD. Many computers have optical drives - but only play CDs - not DVDs. If you can not play DVDs on your computer, this * may * be the reason why. If your computer has a DVD drive (also play CDs) is necessary to finalize the disc (the instructions for it in the video camera will be in the camera manual. There may be some kind of corruption of files on the DVD the camcorder. So - if you have a DVD drive on your computer and have finished the album, you have to use IsoBuster to get DVD files. If you want to editing, you need to brake. You have discovered one of the many reasons that DVD drives are a good idea badly implemented by manufacturers. If you have the opportunity, return the DVD-based camcorder and get a refund either miniDV tape or hard drive based camcorder - You do not have these problems and the video quality will be much better. DVD-based camcorders have the worst possible video quality ... and if you want to rip the DVD (with something like Handbrake) to get the video to you can edit or upload to YouTube or something, the video quality will get even worse ... ++++++++++++++++ You "just purchased and has already lost the CD" I was in the box? You need to find. Then do not have a problem. My regular recommendation for anyone who buys a video camera with a method Strage DVD is to return for a full refund and get a miniDV tape based camcorder. Great HD Hybrid Camcorder, Great Price!

by T. Davyda from on 2010-03-23
I am very satisfied with the purchase of Hitachi DZ-BD10HA Camcorder. It is the only HD hybrid camcorder on the market that offers recording on Blu-ray disc, hard drive and memory card. You can copy the recorded video between all three of them within the camcorder. I usually record my video on the hard drive and then back it up on Blu-ray disc right inside the camcorder. So far no problems. The HD video quality is great!

Versatile Camcorder

by Big Joe from Henderson, NV, USA on 2010-02-12
Just purchased this camcorder new for less than half retail. It takes great video outdoors and average video for sub $1000 camcorders indoors. Despite comments in previous review about Mac compatibility it is very easy to transfer data from the hard drive to either the DVD or directly into a Mac. However, even if it wasn't I wouldn't let that influence my review too much since less than 10% of the population even uses a Mac.

Not compatible, not up to what it claims

by Edith Ings from Minneapolis, MN United States on 2010-01-09
My husband and I have had this camera for a couple of months and have used it quite a bit over the holidays. The picture quality for outdoors is good for a small hand-held camera, and (as with any hand-held) the indoor image quality is a little fuzzy.

One of the first things we both noticed was the short battery life. We only tried the camera in Hard Drive mode, I can't imagine the poor battery life when recording to BluRay.

However, my greatest disappointment was that Hitachi had claimed its Mac compatibility. After several attempts to upload through iMovie and having to force-quit every time, I finally saved my videos through copying them from the camera's hard drive to my Mac's hard drive. The file format used is a Unix Executable File, an .MTS file. This file is not compatible with the Mac OSX system.

Needless to say, neither my husband nor I am happy with this camera.

Terrbile Choice

This charger will not charge my Lenmar Battery RHB66. I even bought a new Lenmar battery to see if the old battery was the problem and it will not charge that one either. I would not recommend this charger.

Will not charge EP096FL

by William E. Jones from Ms, USA on 2006-08-19
This unit will not charge my EP096FL RCA battery. It acts as though the battery is at full charge. I have just put the battery on the original RCA charger and it has been charging for 20 minutes and is still going. This unit has some sensor problems with this model of battery. In summary, for my purposes, this charger is worthless. Good-bye $$$$.

First Video Camera

by John Erickson from Los Angeles, CA (USA) on 2010-05-20
The 5020A is a first timer camera that is going to make home videos of the usual travels, family outings and such. It's actually fairly easy to use and you can use a variety of recordable mini-dvd's. I use the regular DVD-R which are the least expensive and allow the least editing in the camera, but that's me.

SPECIAL NOTE: As mentioned in previous review
DON"T LOSE the battery charger and cord that comes with this camcorder. The camera must be hooked up to a wall plug using the charger converter to run the camera in order to "finalize" the disc so you may view it.

In daylight and bright light the picture is reasonably good but not spectacular, it does not deal with low light very well at all, so indoors or at night you will probably need some type of external and fairly strong light source to record a decent picture. (My Sony 8mm had much better low light capabilities.)

It will on occasion have "disc errors" during recording, you can have the camera rewrite the disc to correct but it is best done if using the wall plug. I segway to another fresh disc when this happens and do corrections at home later. Seen it most with HP brand discs.

For better picture compositions get a wide angle lens/converter as it has a narrow field of view.

It's pretty convenient but definately will frustrate a seasoned videographer. So for the money it's ok, but I doubt I'd select this one again. I will upgrade next time.

Good Value

by S. Zuercher from Ohio - USA on 2010-04-07
Have had this camera for over 2 years. Takes great pictures if you use the best quality setting. The only problem there is that, at least with the disks I have, there are only 19 minutes per disk at this quality. This has not been a major problem as we use it mostly for vacation video and we do short clips anyhow. The disks that I have are re-writable, so we have used them over and over. After many rewrites the camera can be somewhat fussy about re-formatting them. But we have used the same 12 or so disks for the last 2+ years and and only 3 of them have bit the dust the rest are still recording great video. We love that we can record 16:9 and with that setting fill our whole 40" TV screen with stunning video. It has a great zoom and we have been able to capture great pictures of wildlife at a distance. We love the color view finder and that we have the option to use this in bright sunlight. It is small, but lage enough to be able to hold and reach controls easily without undue shaking picture trying to get to zoom or stopping recording. Captures sound well. We have not checked into the settings well so it may be user error, but it does not do as great in low light. We like the digital recording. The recorded disks, if finalized, can be played directly back on some DVD players.

Poor quality

by xjan from Boston, MA on 2009-11-14
I got thic DVD cam as a gift and am very unhappy about it. I wish I could return it. It has multiple problems like reading disks, finalizing disks, poor picture quality and so on. I would not reccomend it.

Quirky Camera - get something different

by Michael Elling from Two Harbors, MN on 2009-01-09
Has trouble with disc formating and playback in general, not to mention the quirky steps needed to "finalize" a dics to be played elswhere or transfered to your computer you need a special cord, which plugs into your battery charger of all things, and then from the charger into the wall. If you loose that cord like I have - you're screwed, you can't any movies out of the camera - the discs won't play in any dvd player and you are just SOL.

The worst thing I have ever bought.

by F. Walter from OR on 2006-08-21
This is the worst camcorder ever. It is not easy to download or burn it. But you can watch your video only on camcorders LCD(nowhere else). I returned it back. It was releaf. I will not buy any Hitachi brand anymore.

Extremely disappointing!!

by James Chesnut from Fredonia, KS USA on 2005-09-13
The camcorder itself is reasonably user-friendly, compact and lightweight...but BEWARE!!! The software that comes with it is absolutely worthless if your computer isn't old as dirt! And don't expect any help from Hitachi - you'll never get a response from anyone. Many great memories are now going to be lost thanks to this joke of a camcorder/software package. We're going to sell this piece of junk and get a REAL camcorder from a REAL company like Sony.

Best way to lose your movies

by Luca from Washington, DC on 2005-08-31
This Hitachi camcorder is truly a piece of junk. I lost the video of some of the best moments of my life thanks to Hitachi's crappy technology. the mini DVD gets corrupted very easily and the content cannot be retrieved anymore.

Absolute Crap

by Paul Sill from Chicago, IL United States on 2004-12-11
It's difficult to translate into suitable words how I feel about this camcorder. To set the stage, I run a software development company and consider myself extremely comfortable with technology. So I'm no amature user of video and software.

This camcorder produces fairly decent image quality in it's middle of the road resolution, but you can only fit about 30 minutes of record time on one of the min-DVD disks, if you want more time on one disk, you need to record at the lowest resolution, which is OK, but not ideal. That is somewhat disappointing, but not the biggest problem.

The REAL problem with this camcorder is the crappy software it ships with and the proprietary format Hitachi records the movie images on the DVD. You see, the movies as they are recorded on the DVD are not in a standard movie format such as MPEG that can be read into any other standard video editing device. The ONLY way you can download and view, edit, and customize your video images is by using their software...So this software requires you to first connect and download all your video from the DVD camcorder to your harddrive and convert it into the MPEG format if you want to use another program like Roxio Media Creator. This connect, convert and download can take several hours and usually, for a full DVD, requires a battery change. (It requires a battery change because the DC/AV connectivity for the camera also sucks, you can not plug the camcorder into the wall, but rather you have to plug the camcorder into the battery charger which then plugs into the wall, a real pain since you have to have all the gear at hand just to download your movies to your computer.)

After you download it of course, you now need to make sure you can create a DVD from your computer that can be read by a DVD player so you can playback your movies. Now, I know, the reason you buy a DVD camcorder is so that you can just pop out your DVDS and play them on the TV in your DVD player! The real world though is more like this, you record dozens of different times on a DVD, like with your new baby, we turn it on for 5 minutes to capture a moment, then turn it off....So ultiamtely, you want to be able to easily edit the entire video so you can create cut-aways, delete junk you recorded by accident etc, so you really want a camcorder to be easy to download and edit. This is not the model for you, and frankly, we're selling ours on EBay and buying a Sony.

FYI, Hitachi technocal support sucks. and FYI, their proprietary software that came with the unit will NOT work at all if ROXIO media creator 5.0 or higher is installed on your computer, so if you, like us, have this program, you'll find yourself spending hours trying to figure out why you can't access your DVD camcorder to download images because their software simply won't work. Total joke.

Take a pass on this one.

Goodbye Hi8, Hello MiniDVD

by D. Afton from Michigan, USA on 2004-05-21
My wife bought me this camera for Christmas. After experiencing video cameras for the better part of 2 decades (remember the gigantic, tv-camera-looking VHS cameras?!), I am elated that technology has come to this. So refreshingly simple, and so integral to one's peace-of-mind in knowing that the clips will endure until our sun burns-out (hope my descendants hang-on to my dear, recorded memories!). I find myself using the RAM disks more, since I can transfer the individual clips to my computer, and edit or arrange as I see fit; the -R disks are a 1-shot deal----what you tape is what you finalize at the end is what you watch on your DVD player. But even those are handy, if you want to simply move seamlessly from taking the disk out of the camera and straight into the DVD player. And even with the -R disks, you'll still get "menu chapter points" on the finished product---separated by each start and stop of the recording, and by date of the recording session. I find the quality great---even the "standard" quality (lowest setting) was great, when we recorded a gig that my band played at (low-light conditions and all). The RAM is great because you can record over and over and over---just buy 1 or 2 $20 disks, and if you transfer to computer, and thence to regular DVD disk, you don't need to buy too many additional. The only real problem has been stocking-up on some of these blank mini-disks----all the cold, unfriendly mega stores (circuit city, best buy, compUSA) always seem to be out, or low on supply. I resorted to ordering them from a company on-line.

No Problems with this Item

by F. Nava from Texas USA on 2009-05-12
I got this camcorder a few years ago and have never had a problem...in fact, I'm quite surprised at all the negative reviews and bad experiences.

Maybe I'm just naive, as this was my first and only DVD camcorder so far. I'm not sure about all the features on other products, but I've gotten so used to this camera that it has never been a problem (however, after reading these reviews, I'm knocking on wood!).

True, the DVD recording time is not long. True, you have to finalize discs before you take them out. True, you can only finalize through an AC outlet. But for the most part, this camera has served my needs. I guess if you are looking for something more elaborate, you can get something else. But this item works well and serves its purpose.

Hitachi DZ-BX35A DVD Video Camera and Recorder

by D. Cox from on 2009-05-08
BEWARE! BEWARE! BEWARE! This recorder work great for a few days but gave me a disk error on the 4th day. I lost everything from that day because it would not finalize the disk. So maybe it was the disk (trying benefit of the doubt). However now it stays stuck on `DISS ACCESS'. I called Hitachi and was told I have to go to St Louis to get it fixed. I live in Kansas. I ask to make a complaint and was given the run around. They need to open a file, they asked A LOT of questions regarding my address, full name, numbers, etc (not all actually needed to get an address so I can write a complaint letter. Then I get transferred to a rude woman (I wasn't even told I was getting transferred) who tells me there are only 6 authorized businesses who can work on the camera because they go through intensive training. This does not change anything about me trying to make a complaint. She said she would make a note of this. HA! I then asked for a confirmation number, she went crazy - assuring me the complaint would be taken care of. (Sure!). She finally gave me a case number. I told her I was going to call back to check if it was really a case number attached to this situation. This pushed her over the edge. The call did not end well and I did call back to find Hitachi's notes on this situation were few and more about me being a problem instead of the camera. BEWARE!

YOU WILL LOSE PRECIOUS MOMENTS!!!!!!!!!!

by shopper24 from on 2009-01-05
I have had off and on again problems with hitachi hybrid, and now the dvd will not eject disc and i can't access dvd mode. I have many discs that were not finalized(which means no playback!!!!!) Plus almost every time I recorded onto disc, I had disc error, and had to stop recording and repair, and missed many special moments. DO NOT BUY!!!!!

UPDATE: Recieved new hitachi hybrid, and STILL SAME PROBLEM!!!!!!At first it worked, and I thought maybe first camcorder was a lemon, but here we go again!!!!!! I lost the 2nd half of my kids birthday party, the best parts, the opening of gifts, the pinata, the cousins all playing together, some very funny, great moments, ALL LOST because halfway through recording onto HDD mode, I get a message "repair data now or images will be deleted". By the time I repair the dang thing, the moment is gone.........SO DISAPPOINTED. Sending back. I've learned the hard way, 2 things.....#1always have back up for those "priceless" moments......and #2 Its better to not even bother with an unreliable camcorder/camera during those special moments, because you'll become so distracted with the camcorder/camera, that you'll miss out on just ENJOYING and taking in the moment.

Buy carefully -- this camera may be TROUBLE!

I can't believe this camera has been so highly-rated. This camera wasted lots of my time recording important events and then was unable to reliably "finalize" my discs for display on my DVD players. I recorded 5 brand-new discs at an event last night, everything seemed fine, and then later that night two of the five discs failed to finalize and gave messages about the discs being corrupted or unreadable. The only options were to fix the problems by re-formatting the discs and permanently losing contents of two of the discs. (That's a 40% rate of loss!) I used the recommended Maxell DVD-RW discs to avoid exactly this sort of problem and still got very poor results. In advance of a big vacation in two weeks I'm going out to shop for another camera tonight. DON'T BUY THIS CAMERA unless you TEST THOROUGHLY in advance of your vacation or special event. I may have a lemon, but this could be the current state of Hitachi quality and performance. It may also be a problem inherent in recording to mini-DVDs. All I know is that I am very frustrated after following all directions and instructions carefully. I lost some important video memories when I used this camera and I'm not letting it happen on my big vacation in two weeks.

A beginner's view: Having a great experience with this camcorder so far

I purchased this Hitachi DZ-BX35A DVD Camcorder at a clearance price on the spur-of-the-moment one day prior to my departure to Egypt for a 2 week Holiday. The clearance price was $149 and I figured the worst case was that I'd get some video images from our trip and I'd learn a bit about camcorders and be better educated for a future purchase when the prices drop for the HD flash memory models. Despite the quick purchase decision, I did attempt a bit of background research on DVD camcorders and this Hitachi model in particular. Because we would not have access to a computer during our travels, the DVD models seemed a good bet as I could take along a supply of discs and do the transfers later on return home. On checking reviews of this model at some of the online camcorder sites I saw several reviewers who totally panned this model giving it very low ratings across all aspects of its performance. This almost disuaded me from buying but then I noticed one comment on one of the reviews noting that the reviewers were comparing this to $500-800 models. He noted that he was a beginner and was happy so far. The $149 price was too much to resist so I went back and bought the Hitachi and 6 DVD+RW discs the day prior to my departure. I could not find the highly rated Maxell disks and bought Sony instead. They have worked fine. They play on my computer DVD player as well as on my home theatre DVD player.

So with that prelude, how has it worked? I am totally satisfied so far (but recognize this is my first experiecne recording any kind of video). I suspect some of my quibbles are common to many camcorders - for example, the 100x zoom is great (even astonishing) but you have to learn to control the speed of the zoom and a tripod or some camera support is almost essential at the longer focal lengths. In the bright sun wearing sunglasses, I found the view finder virtually impossible to use; the LCD display was usable but very hard to see any detail. The focus seems to lag a bit sometimes while panning on objects at different distances. Battery life seemed adequate and the ability to run the camera in the hotel off the DC cord was helpful for reviewing the prior day's shooting, formatting disks, etc. The AC adapeter worked fine on either 110 or 220V. Again, speaking as a beginner with nothing else to compare it to the image quality seems fine for a 640x480 resolution and played on my 42" plasma with adequate resolution. Some of clips I shot seemed to be a bit off on the color rendition and some in the Egyptian desert sun were kind of wahsed out (but then again it was incredibly bright out there).

My only complaint at this point is with the power switch - its too easy to accidentally turn on or off. There is supposedly a lock button but on my model it does not seem to work. This is mainly worrisome regarding the time it take the camera to write the images just shot onto the disk.

Some minor stuff: the menus seem a bit awkward to use and the still photo option records only to an SD card at only 1.3 megapixzels but this is not unique to Hitachi models. Overall, I am delighted with this camera so far and have found a an excellent learning experience.
