Aiptek Quality Control and Customer Service Missing in Action

by Stephen Patterson from Kansas City, MO on 2010-02-18
I was really looking forward to putting this inexpensive camcorder to work, but unfortunately we never even got to the starting line. After examining the contents of the package I discovered that the battery charger cradle has a round power plug but the wall charger supplied has a mini-usb. Hmmm? Can you say square peg in a round hole? OK, no big deal…I will call Aiptek in California and have them send the correct wall charger, or battery cradle. Boy was I naive. After spending 20 minutes on the phone trying to convince the customer service rep that I was really not interested in trying to steal an extra cable for my camcorder I was informed that they would not send a replacement until I returned (at my expense) the incorrect cable. I then asked to speak to a supervisor. 10 minutes later and the rep came back on the phone and said that since I had purchased from Amazon I would have to take the issue up with them. Fine. Amazon returns, I learned, are painless. I returned this piece of junk and ordered a real camcorder from a real manufacturer (Canon). Save yourself from Aiptek. They obviously have no control over the Chinese contract manufacturer who is building this junk for them. Five stars for Amazon though, who continue to impress me with first class service.

The product I’ve recieved

Did not come with a USB Cable to connect the camera to the PC, or TV, Couldn’t find a place to contact you so I thought I’d try this.
Any ideas or help?

Aipek .asf video playing on computer

by Joe E. Perez from Phoenix, Arizona USA on 2009-07-14
There are several ways to play the .asf video files on the computer. First, media player in my windows vista does not play these files. It keeps saying there is an audio codec missing. I have the VLC player and it does play these files. I just went into the default programs area to associate .asf files with the vlc player instead of media player. You can also change the file name from .asf to .asx, I tried that and media player did play the .asx file. Also you can convert the file from .asf to something that media player does play such as .avi files. The camera software disc that came with the camera has a movie converter or you can use any other converter. I really like this camera, espesially it’s ability to record off the tv or dvd player. In fact I was looking for a low priced camera to put in my shirt pocket while recording off my night vision device and I found it. My Canon TX1 does not have a video input, only output.

Cheap, poor quality, broken video files

by Antonie Struyk from on 2009-05-24
The video is poor quality. The build quality is EXTREMELY poor, the charger for the battery that is supplied is finicky (the battery has to be seated ‘just right’ in order for it to charge at all) and when using the A/V in it often creates broken files that cannot be played back at all.

Quality Control Issues

by javajunki from on 2009-05-21
I purchased this three years ago when it first came out – including all the extras, battery etc…unfortunately, the quality is simply not there. Image is fuzzy, shakes easily and although convenient – the pictures and images left a lot to be desired. However, the biggest problem was the batteries – every one of them died quickly after just a few charges none would hold a charge. Basically, an inferior piece of junk that had a lot of potential. BTW, I didn’t exactly have high expectations – just wanted something to leave in the purse or toss around for those spur of the moment situations. Didn’t even fit the bill for that.

It takes 2 days for it to charge and use for ONE DAY ONLY! Please! get one that is better. It might cost more, but trust me, it would be worth every penny!!

Exactly as described!

by Jill Caturano from on 2008-07-23
I needed this battery for a video camera I had, and it was easy for me to choose it because of the great description and detailed picture. It holds a charge for a pretty long time and is easy to recharge when it dies.

Good life on battery.

by Alexander Erdman from on 2007-07-11
I am buying my 3rd battery due to the good life span on this battery. The charger that I have charges it in no time at all and the battery lasts a good long time.

Fine Battery

by Doug Beatty from on 2007-03-08
I get about 60 minutes or so before it needs recharging. I’ve heard that this is the same manufacturer/size as Nokia cell phone batteries, so a Nokia replacement battery may also work.

Great Spare Battery

by Winnie J. Dortch from USA on 2007-01-01
This looks and works exactly like the battery that came with the camera. My 8 yr. old Granddaughter loves her camera and plays with the video feature and voice recorder alot. The battery seems to last a long time before running down. (I have not actually timed it) It makes it nice having a spare.

No Turn On

by Kenneth Lilagan from San Jose, CA on 2009-10-28
this remote works with Aiptek A-HD+, BUT there is no way to turn it on.
Why why why? why did they create a remote that does not have the ability to turn on? thats what a remote is for!
the most important feature is left out.

Also works for the Aiptek A-HD+

by T SR from on 2009-08-30
I bought this to use on my Aiptek A-HD+ 1080P. Aiptek’s webpage said this is the remote that goes along with it. The only downside is that it can’t turn the camera on or off.

Very useful item

by Gadget fool from Daytona Beach, Fl. USA on 2008-03-12
This remote’s small size belies it’s usefulness. It makes the Aiptek MPVR camera twice as convenient to use since you don’t have to risk upsetting your camera’s aim by touching it. You can do everything with the remote you can do with the camera’s buttons and more smoothly. Love it!

Works great

by G. Carter from Illinois on 2008-01-26
This was purchased for use with the Aiptek digital/video camera. My son can set his camera up, get in front of it and use the remote to take pictures or make a video of himself/friends. They upload this material to their myspace pages. (some sort of struggling comedy team) that was supposed to gurantee Mom a financially secure future afther they were discovered, lol. Doesn’t hurt to dream a lil, lol. Great product, serves it purpose.

Worked for 10 days – then dead…

by Kurt J. Heinz from Chicago, IL on 2009-05-26
Product worked for 10 days – then the screen would not illuminate, my computer would no longer recognize it when connect via USB and the unit would not turn off (blue light stayed on).

Contacted supplier who referred me to the manufacturer who eventually sent an RMA to return the item for replacement.

We’ll see…

For the price, it’s great

by eacmacro from Md. on 2009-03-06
Though I bought this from another source, I feel compelled to respond to one of the reviewer’s comments in regard to the 4GB card issue. I ordered a 4GB HC SD from another online vendor and ever since I first formatted it, it has worked flawlessly; aside from the video/audio syncing “problem”. There has never been any errors and it’s rather unfortunate that yours doesn’t seem to accept them. I’m rather surprised that the unit would even accept a higher capacity SD card. Initially I thought the video/audio issue was caused by this card but it turns out it was an undocumented “feature” of the camera that is fixable. I have a new-found appreciation for this low cost unit.

Great camera, but theres a little lie!

by Allen Cisneroz from TX, USA on 2008-12-03
In the description of this item on the Amazon product page for the camera, it states it can work on a memory card of up to 4 GB. Thats not true. The max is only 2 GB. It was stated in the User Manuel for the camera and there was a card error when you try to format. Also, if you insert a card larger than 2 GBs, anything you record will go directly to the camera’s internal memory of 15 MBs. So this is a great camera, great for little things, but nothing High Def.

Deduct one star due to the audio/video sync issue and lack of external mic jack

by ChrisP from In GA, from NY on 2008-07-02
Okay, this camera is pretty much outdated now that Aiptek and others have come out with their various HD cameras, but I got mine at a deep discount a couple of weeks before Christmas ‘07, so it was worth it to me.

I already had an Aiptek camera and decided to get this one because each camera has features that the other doesn’t. My first one can be used as a webcam, which the mpvr+cb can’t. The mpvr, however, has A/V in and can be used as a personal video recorder/player, which is a feature my other Aiptek doesn’t have.

I use the older Aiptek mainly as a dashcam in my car, since its shape allows it to sit upright, leaning slightly on the lcd screen. It attaches to the dash with velcro.

I use the MPVR+CB for general video shooting and photo taking, and in places where using/carrying my Mini DV would be difficult. I also use the MPVR to record from other video sources, such as my Mini DV or TV broadcasts, as one might use a TiVo or other DVR. The one downside to this is that the audio and video often end up out of sync when recorded with this camera, so I have to synchronize them myself using video editing software.

Now, if I’d paid several hundred dollars for this camera and it had this issue, I’d return it. But it didn’t cost near that much and I bought it knowing it had this issue and that I’d have to deal with it in editing.

I use this camera, and use it often, due to several factors:
1) it’s small; it can fit in a pocket, purse or small camera bag
2) it has no moving parts; it records to SD cards. The max I’ve tried so far is 4 gigs.
3) it’s very easy to transfer the video to my computer for editing; no firewire or recording to another digital source like I have to do with my Mini DV.
4) the video and picture quality are decent for what this camera cost.
5) it’s got a somewhat usable image stabilizer and slightly less usable night shot mode

It is somewhat limited.
1) Already mentioned the A/V sync problem.
2) It’s got a digital zoom only, which means you’re not going to get good close-ups of something down the street or high up in a tree. If I need a powerful zoom I go to my Mini DV.
3) The Night Shot mode works by slowing down the shutter, which produces an effect that some people don’t like. Probably better to use a flashlight if you’re going to shoot in the dark. :)
4) It would be great if it had a place to plug in an external microphone as the built-in mic is somewhat limited in range and power

Not much in the way of manual settings. You can change preset white balance settings (auto, sun, 2 types of indoor lighting, shade) and change exposure settings somewhat. You can choose video quality (QVGA (320×240), VGA (640×480) and D1 (720×480).

I’ve never used the MP3 player since I have a Sansa and a Nano for playing music/podcasts and I also haven’t tried the voice recorder because I have a digital audio recorder for that kind of thing, so I can’t comment on those two features.

Overall, I like this camera, even with its faults. I didn’t pay what Amazon’s charging for it, but if you understand what this camera is(consumer level pocket-sized video camera, digital camera, PVR) and what it isn’t (it isn’t meant to be a super-duper pro level camera–you’re not going to get that at this price point). Before anyone buys a camera or camcorder of any kind they should do some research so they know what to expect. That’s exactly what I did and I’m very happy with this camera.

Good unit with a little solvable problem

by Gadget fool from Daytona Beach, Fl. USA on 2008-02-09
This unit, like some other Aiptek cameras, has a slight problem with video and sound synchronization. It is fixable, however, by downloading a free firmware upgrade from Aiptek’s website. Go to their website and find Support at the top of the page. Go to E-mail Support and click on the line that says “Do I need a firmware update?”. Firmware is a little bit of information in the camera that makes it perform. They will want your model and serial numbers and will send you the update via e-mail. I got mine back in two days and installed it. Tip: Be sure to press the button on the screen first, then the other button for installation. You will need an SD flash memory card to install the firmware. All is fine now. An average computer user will have no trouble with this at all.

Little but good

by L. Shrum from Iowa on 2009-03-02
I have enjoyed using this camcorder. It is fun and easy to use and doesn’t take up a lot of space.

for the money it is great!

by Tamiko Yoshida from japan on 2008-12-07
OK

I have had this thing now for two years. I got it a C.City on sale. It had a mail in rebate so the total cost came to 50 dollars.

Pros: It is cheap and it works. It fits into your pocket and you do not worry about wasting DVD disks. It is fun and for the price you could care less if it breaks on not. It has yet to break and i have two boys that grab it and shoot there own videos. What do I care. We shoot all the time on it and they love watching themselves. IT is fun. It does what it says it does. Had a removable disk card.

Cons. Well remember we are talking about a cheap plastic peice of electronics. Pic quality is poor. So dont expect to win at cannes film festival. The software that came with this device does not work on vista but I emailed the manufatuer and they sent me a web site for a free video download and it fixed everything. Battery life … make sure you get rechargable.

This is a fun cheap peice of equipment. I take it to the zoo and sometimes i just shoot at home. If you want something that is easy to use and fun and cheap. This is a good choice. I have no regrets . When i upgrade i am going to give it to my boys and let them have at it.

I wanted to give it a five for the price but i had to take off a few for the fact that by now there is probably something better for the money out there .. probably from the same company… with better quality. But as of two years ownership it has performed beyond my expectations .. It is just not for serious video making.

Great for kids

by noname from usa on 2008-10-23
Got two of these last christmas for my kids. Ended up paying around $50 each with discounts I had. For my kids age 8 and 14 these have been great. They love to make stop motion movies. It was well worth the money. And they’ve used them almost everday since christmas.Only had one problem and that was a knob fell off after my son dropped his but it still works. They may drop the price on them like they did last christmas, if they do snap one up for your kid.

There’s an even amount of pros and cons

by Kerrin E. Allen from New York on 2008-07-22
I got this camera about 4 mos. ago, and have waited until I fully used the camera a lot to write this review. So here we go:

The Pros:

1. This is a cheap camera, and won’t hurt your budget.

2. This is a great camcorder for vacations, where optimum picture quality isn’t your number one concern.

3. This camcorder is small and very easy to operate.

4. The camcorder comes with a USB cable and it is easy to post videos and pictures onto your computer.

5. It’s a camera and camcorder all in one.

The CONS:

1. This camcorder ISN’T COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS VISTA. I found this out the hard way, when I couldn’t even so much as play my videos on my computer, unless I uploaded them on Youtube, then watched them. I watched the videos on my brother’s computer, which has XP, and it was fine. So watch out.

2. This camera comes with features that actually take away from the quality: For example, there is a built-in microphone that sounds like you’re talking into a tin can. Also, the camera is only battery powered (2 AA batteries), with no AC adapter. If you even wanted an AC adapter, there is no jack on the camcorder to use one.

3. The product eats your batteries if you happen to film anything over an hour in length. Duracell usually lasts longer, but I’d recommend lithium batteries so they last. Cheap, dollar store batteries take about five minutes to die. Also, the flash on the camera will drain fully powered batteries.

4. Whenever you record a video and stop, that is the end of the video and you cannot continue the same recording on the same file. For example, if you were making a movie just for fun, and you stopped the recording to cut a scene, you’d have to start another video file to do that. It’s irritating if you’re trying to make a movie.

5. The picture quality suffers drastically unless the lighting is really bright.

6. The zoom is worthless, and when you zoom something, it is just blurry.
