Best Software For Video Editing

Best Software For Video Editing

What is the best Video editing software?

I know Photoshop is the best for photos, but what is the best for videos editing besides Windows Movie Maker?

I recently purchased Pinnacle 11, my first video editing software package. I chose it because it’s used by many professionals and considered very powerful.

What surprised me is that I was able to begin using it quickly and easily. I can see that there is a lot for me to learn but I’m pleased that they made the package intuitive enough for me to use it right out of the box.

Always on hand…

by Aimee from on 2010-07-29
I got this as a gift so I can video on the go. I keep it in it’s case in my purse all the time. The transfer software is easy to use and there is an iphone app I use so the videos are easy to access on my phone, and my husbands phone. I love the flip channel you create through the software so that when I save to my channel and delete from the device I can access the video from my phone or any internet access. This is easy to use, easy to store so that it is with you all the time. The only disadvantage is the zoom. The viewing on the the device is excellent, but when watching on computer or tv is doesnt look high-def. Over all I would still recommend as it is great to have with you all the time.

Flip UltraHD Camcorder, 120 Minutes

by C. Steele from warwick, ri United States on 2010-07-29
I bought the Flip HD post Christmas, after Amazon sent one of their usual emails.
After carefully reading over all the reviews this is the one I chose and I am very happy with my choice. My family took it on a ski trip and captured some wonderful shots of everyone skiing, with no problems with the sound! Priceless.
The picture, color, and sound are wonderful. Only two things I would like to see improved is the zoom and some sort of stabilizer. I purchased a tripod but it is not good enough. I have a Panasonic HD that I have used and loved for years, but I wanted something more portable and this does the trick. I will use the big one for the zoom and the lengthy events such as a play or sporting event.
The only “problem” is the battery system. The camera will tell you how much time you have..but that is memory-not the power.
Should you recharge without depleting the battery energy then the battery capacity is reduced forever. I bought rechargeable batteries that can be charged at any time in just 10 min. and lasts as long as the camera memory. This also gave me spare in case I don’t have time to recharge.
I would certainly purchase this again…especially now that the price has come down in the past 7 months.

A Very Good Buy

by JT from Inkster, Michigan USA on 2010-07-28
I purchased this camera for a Caribbean cruise. It was the best portable camera that I could image. I carried it in my pocket and took it out for recording. The quality of the video is fantastic.

I had a problem with it while on vacation. I took the camera out to record found that the screen was mostly black with some lines. I recorded anyway and found that it continued to record but the monitor was shot. This was after 8 days of use. I contacted support and they had me to try some things but they didn’t work. I requested a replacement and they replaced the camera. It took a couple weeks but they honored that warranty.

I recommend purchasing this camera. The editing software that is in the camera was limited but easy to use to edit my video. Here are two videos recorded on the Flip Ultra HD and edited with its software. The camera has rough video when you walk and record, as you can see in the video, but this is great for family get togethers. It’s so easy to carry.

A Disappointment

by Yeah Right from NJ, USA on 2010-07-27
I was very excited to get this camera. I read the reviews about the battery problems and thought; “Well there isn’t a large enough group of reviewers with that problem to worry me about my choice.”

Boy was I wrong.

The battery wouldn’t charge from day 1. It would get very hot when it was plugged in to my computer. It would give me battery error after battery error. I tried every remedy I found online and nothing worked. A whole lot of people online have posted about this problem. It is rampant with this camera.

I underwent the terrible process of sending it back to Flip for support. Their customer support is horrendous. The website is poorly laid out, and it is nearly impossible to contact the company. I finally sent the camera back after emailing several technicians (who refused to admit that it was a very prevalent problem with their product).

Several weeks later, I got a refurbished camera in a white box. I was happy. Problem solved, right?

Wrong. The replacement camera HAD THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM. I now have to use AA batteries to operate the camera, but this thing burns through batteries like wildfire. I had a terrible experience with this camera and cannot recommend it to anyone.

*Here is a review of the other features of the camera, aside from the terrible battery.

It records decent video and the sound is good too. The USB flipout dongle is nice in that you don’t have another cable to carry around. However, it is not flexible, so I couldn’t plug it into my Macbook because the camera body got in the way. I had to get a separate wired USB hub out to use it without breaking the plug or my computer. The included software is terrible. Clunky, slow, and idiotically designed.

Bottom line: Stay far, far away.

Excellent camera for water sports

by M. Dikov from East Bay, CA on 2010-07-31
I bought this camera to replace an older MiniDV camera. I wanted to have a low cost replacement that produces wide screen HD video and is suitable for water sports. Our family goes to the pool a lot. My son is on a swim team and the water proof part is a real benefit. I can make a movie of his swim meets, or dive for an underwater movie. Then he can see his performance and improve.

We also used the camera in outdoors swimming in a river. The still camera came in handy where no other camera can go. The quality of the video seems to be a bit below the FlipHD, however the materials are much better quality and the camera comes with all that’s needed including HDMI cable. There is also a remote control for $10, which is really nice when you want to review the movies on the TV.

The format of the movies is MOV, which is a bit of a hassle. MPEG would’ve been better.

In low light the camera performs inconsistently, but meets my expectations. I bought the camera with an Amazon offer for a free 8GB memory card, so with that the price was comparable with Flips, but in addition you get water proof, 720p/60 frames video for faster action, cables, great kodak rechargeable battery high quality built unit, no cheap materials.

Great little camera

by Rita Stoufflet from Lewisville, TX United States on 2010-07-29
This is exactly what I wanted in a camera and for the right price. I didn’t want another large bulky camera to carry around since I won’t give up my Nikon D5000 and that goes everywhere. The Kodak camera is great for just the short videos of the kids I want, I am not filming an entire family vacation. Though I put an 8 GB memory card in the camera and it will take over 2 hours of video. I have never really used a video camera and having an image stabilizer was important to me so my shaky filming wouldn’t make me sick, it works great.
The only two things I don’t like so much – the battery life isn’t that great so you have to be careful to make sure it is charged if there is something important to film. I plan on getting another to have on hand. The second thing is that filming close up isn’t that easy cause you can’t zoom out very far. But other than those two things I love this little video camera and the fact that I can take it around water is great since my Nikon isn’t going anywhere near water.

GREAT HD VIDEO FOR UNIVERSAL STUDIOS (Flip HD Killer!)

by D. PADILLA from The Alamo City on 2010-07-28
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R32PTFSM7PEYF9 After spending several days researching HD cameras I decided on the Playsport and for the most part I was not disappointed. I won’t bore you with a long review but rather point out what I found to be most important. I used this camera for a week in Orlando Florida at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios, and Wet N Wild. I bought a neck lanyard and was good to go.
POSITIVES
1. Very Very light and Compact, fits in small pockets. A+
2. Very Very easy to use controls and buttons. A+
3. Video quality is amazing. I primarily used 780p 60 Frames Second setting A+
4. Purchased a 16 GB Card and was able to record up to 3 hours 780P video. Over 6 hours standard video A+
5. Software was easy to install and use.
6. Good still picture quality, face recognition, OK zoom, and image stabilization. A-
7. Comes with an HDMI cable!
8. WATERPROOF, although was having to constantly un-fog the lens A-
NEGATIVES
1. Average battery life. BUY AN EXTRA BATTERY! I ran out of battery after 6 hours in Universal Studios with only moderate use. C+
2. Low light video and still pictures are poor quality C+. (This is not a huge drawback because I planned to mainly use this outdoors)
3. Does not come with an SD card.

My daughter loves this camera!

by Helen B from long island,ny on 2010-07-28
My 10 yr old daughter wanted a camera that she could use and I was tired of worrying about her using my video and digital camera. She takes great pictures with it and especially loves the underwater video feature!! The video is so clear, I think it is a really great camera for the price.

Poor Battery Life

by Vilma B. Decena from Hercules, CA on 2010-07-28
Like the Features. Has quick startup (about 3 seconds for screen to come on and 5 seconds for starting of recording from off position). Have brought it to waterparks and have dropped it several times and still records and plays like new. When you bring the camera out of the water make sure to shake off excess water from the mic area, or you will have a muffled sound being recorded…. like water in your ears. Keep screen away from sand and keys. It is very clear playback and I have received compliments from many friends and relatives from simple recordings I have made. Sunny outside recording is great, but viewing through window can be difficult even with the proper selection setting for viewing outside. Under cloudy condtions, works excellent, no problems. Although under low light conditions picture can be somewhat grainy, this camera is really meant to be used in adequate lighting.

Controls are simple, even my 7 year old can figure it out. But under playback, when you pause a clip and want to forward or skip to next one, it can get kinda tricky… I always seem to have difficulty with this task. Also During playback I notice that even if I record in 1080P…if hooked up to the tv directly… it comes up 720p. It only comes up 1080p when I move the clip to a cpu, then dvd. Then replay thru playstation 3.

What I did not like was the battery life. While recording my son’s 1 hour basketball game, was only able to catch the first 3 quarters, then battery died and had to be recharged. I was recording at 720p at 60 fps, and did not record continuously. I gave the camera small breaks as I started to watch the battery meter get low. I have only had the camera since May 25, 2010. I would suggest purchasing several extra batteries and a external charger for as the camera (when plugged in) does not seem to charge when in playback mode or recording. I do notice a slight temperature rise during playback.

I would only hope that Kodak would lower the price of batteries and also include a small floater cable with this. Camera does not float, sinks very fast.

I hope this review helps a bit.

Would I buy this again?… Yes escpecially for the value of waterproof HD.

Flip Ultra Camcorder, 2nd Generation 120 minutes is easy to use, one page of instructions, that’s all. Very small and lightweight. The video clarity and brightness is good. I have not transfered to the computer or TV yet so can’t give an opinion on that aspect. Chose this model as I was not sure of my computer or TV capability. I also like it because it uses AA batteries, nothing fancy to charge, When batteries are dead, just change. defective LCD screen

by J. Steiger from Philadelphia,pa on 2010-05-25
This is the second handy cam I was stupid enough to buy! With he first model HC 20, the LCD screen was recalled. After sending mine back and getting it fixed, it proceeded to break again within 3 months. Thinking that they would rectify this problem I soon bought the HC 52. Within a year now, it’s LCD screen is not working and they want $70 dollars to repair! Forget it! No more Sony for me!

*****Excellent Value*****

Its not high definition but the video quality is very good for this price.
The Sony DCR-HC52 is well built (solid), has very nice basic features and easy to use.
Great unless you have the computer horsepower and $$$$ for a (HD) high definition camcorder
like the Canon VIXIA HF40 (also with fire-wire/ilink, maybe my next camcorder).
Its auto-focus works well and this camcorder is an excellent weight, not too heavy and not too light.
I use it just fine with an older G4 Macintosh that has a fire-wire port.
Imovie recognizes this camera and imports the video for editing easily and exported DV files work
fine to make DVD’s with my Mac’s pre-installed iMovie and iDVD applications.
I been somewhat discouraged by new HD camera reviews from users that mention problems with
the new non fire-wire camcorders with Mac computers especially Sony camcorders.
This it not the case with the Sony DCR-HC52 made in 2008……..
You can find the Sony DCR-HC52 now (May 2010) for less than $250.00 new.

*****RECOMMENDED*****

Great 2nd Camcorder

Bought this after reading the reviews here at Amazon. Went to Best Buy and they recomended this one as well. We have 2 kids in different sports that play at the same time, which was the need for the purchase. Checked tracking 2 days before it was supposed to arrive, the info shown that the shipping company had not yet picked it up ? I emailed customer support had a response back that night that the order was lost? They shipped out another FedEx no charge and I still receive it on the orignal date that was promised !!!! I will continue to use Amazon as my first choice for purchasing as long as the customer support stays this good !

Camcorder death

by AJW from on 2010-02-06
I purchased this camcorder a year ago and used it less than 10 hours. I ejected a cassette and now the compartment won’t close. The camcorder is also flashing a C:32:11 error code. Its dead!

Sony’s customer service suggests removing the battery or dc cable and resetting the camera which didn’t work. A web search of the error code turned up a huge amount of comments and solutions on this issue including banging the bottom of the camcorder with a hammer. Since the camcorder didn’t work I tried the hammer solution…it still doesn’t work! I can’t find anyone in my area to repair it and Sony wants $200 to repair (if they can) it.

I choose to replace the DCR-HC52 with a Sony flash camcorder which has fewer moving parts, uses memory cards instead of cassettes and uses all of the accessories I’ve already purchased.

Great camera for the price

by Michelle R from Gulf Breeze, FL on 2010-07-22
I bought 8 of these cameras to use at a conference that I manage each year. We video instructors “practice teaching” and give them a disk to take home so they can watch themselves and see what (if anything) they need to improve). The cameras were very easy to use. The only problem we had was with the long time it takes to finalize each disk. Next year, we will use two cameras in each room so that we don’t have to wait for one to finalize before taping the next instructor.

I brought the camera home for my husband to look over before I started using them. He is very picky about his electronics and he loved this camera. The size and weight are incredible and he thought the picture quality was very good. He did mention that the picture does get grainy when you zoom – but he also said that is to be expected.

All in all, we thought it was a great camera for the price.

So far so good

by Ohio mom from Mentor, Ohio on 2010-07-15
Took a lot longer to be delivered than anticipated (about 2 weeks) and when it arrived it was programmed for Spanish and instruction book was also in Spanish. Downloaded an instruction book and all is fine. Have only used the camcorder a couple of times but so far it’s working great, easy to use and pictures are perfect. I like that you can use a disk that can be removed and placed right in your dvd player without having to download/upload.

I bought a Sony DVD video camera model 308 2 years ago. I contacted Sony and they want $171.00 to repair it.My question is has Sony improved the quality enough to buy another one. What is the best Sony I can buy for about $500.00.

Very pleased

The only drawback I’ve ever found with this product is the lack of night lighting/flood light.

Other than that, I love this Video camera.

Great camera for the money

by NManitou from Michigan on 2010-07-30
First HD cam corder. I edit all my video using Adobe premiere elements 8.0 and was worried about editing HD with my window pc. first video went well. I don’t think I will ever go back to standard def. 25X optical zoom is excellent . did not experience any blurred images for fast moving subjects like the pocket cameras. Bought camera for a vacation hope it goes well. Owned camera about a month. Great buy for the money.

Wonderful Little Camera

by L. Olmos from los angeles on 2010-06-13
I wasn’t going to write a review, but after re-reading some of the prior reviews and one of them giving 1 star for a poor user interface, I feel compelled to offset the reviewer’s 1 star with my 5 stars.

I’ve had the cx110 for over a week and love it and see no reason for the prior reviewer’s 1 star rating. The cx110 is small and light weight and comes with us to all family events. It is is a huge improvement over my old Hi8 camera purchased 8 years ago. Now, I don’t feel like a dork pulling out a brick of an antiquated video camera to preserve memories.

I found a great deal on a 8gb SDHC class 6 card at frys dot com via slickdeals dot com. I’m recording at the 2nd highest level quality (FH) and the 8gb provides ~50-60 mins of recording time. The highest quality setting provides ~40-50 mins of recording time.

The quality of recorded video/audio is excellent for the size and price of the camera. It handles low light pretty well in my opinion. Natural light colors come through great.

My plan is to take the .mts files and burn them to a DVD and play them back on my samsung c5500 blue ray player. I guess this has something to with AVCHD or something which I’m still trying to figure out. The bad thing now, is my older Dell struggles to playback the HD video.

The camera’s provided PMB software looks okay, as it imports the mts files and will categorize them by date/time into a calendar view which is nice. It also includes a trimmer/editor in which you can cut out the beginning and/or end of a video clip and save it as a new file. The PMB program will also take the files you select and make a dvd out of it.

I know there are other editing/authoring programs out there, but this one is free and included with the camera. Note: if your computer has choppy/stuttering play back issues like mine, check out a free player called Splash (lite). Play back is a lot is smoother but still not the best (which I attribute to my specs: older P4 dual core and older 256mb Ati video card).

Supplied with the cx110 is a usb cable, composite cable for SD tv viewing and component cable for HD tv viewing. I bought a mini HDMI cable on amazon for ~$5, and have yet to use it. I also bought a 30mm UV filter to protect the lens for ~$6 on amazon as well… Small investment to protect a $400+ camera.

In summary, if you’re thinking about this camera go for it. I’m glad I pulled the trigger on this camera, as our baby coming in Dec 2010, will have plenty of HD memories to look back on when he/she gets older. Not to mention my current sons 7 and 4 yrs, love watching videos of themselves, and the cx110 is perfect as we can watch videos instantly, as many times as we want. And also delete unneeded videos when ever we want. DO IT!

Send me a comment if you have any questions.

amazing little camera

by N. Mehrotra from Calgary, AB on 2010-06-09
Worth Every penny. Got it pretty quick. The HD quality is mind blowing ( I was expecting too much). The sound is crisp as well, no idea how it manages to capture so much detail.

BEWARE! POORLY designed device

by 4maveric from USA on 2010-05-26
What a mess of a device! This camera is junk… VERY hard to figure out the menus… NOT intuitive at all. I create software so I think I should know… This is possibly the worst user interface I have ever experienced. Sad because its a good quality camera, just ruined by a crap interface. Buy any other brand.

Nice camera but mal-functioned in 90 day warranty period

by W. Richardson from on 2010-05-26
We really do like our Sony HDR-CX110 high def Handycam camcorder. It is easy to use and takes beautiful high def videos. Unfortunately, our camera had to be returned to Sony for repair during the 90 day warranty period. This is the description of the problem I provided to Sony with the returned camera: “When viewing door of Handycam is opened, it responds with a message: “the viewing lens cover might be closed, check the cover” regardless of whether the lens cover is open or closed. The viewing area of the screen is dark even with the lens open (not covered), but in other respects normal. It will actually record videos and take pictures but the picture and video recorded is blank/dark. Audio (when recording a video) does record and play back.”

I hope the camera they return to me is more reliable. They will provide a new 90 day warranty period. I have to pay shipping to the Sony repair center but they will pay shipping when they return a functioning camera to me. Luckily the problem started just before the 90 day warranty period expired. They will cover both parts and labor. Given this experience, I would suggest purchasing an extended warranty for this camera.

horrible picture quality

Good Sunlight Camera

by M. Temple from Farmerville, LA on 2010-06-07
Quick Delivery. Easy startup. 2.5-3hr battery life. Super outside/sunlight/beach videos. Simple playback/copy to PC. Average Video Software provided for PC. Audio is good. Great Values for price.

This is not a HD camera. Lower quality videos than my Sony handy-cam 8mm. Poor low light/insight light video. Poor= grainy, dark, time to focus. View screen does not Swivel.

Overall this camera meets my needs and the budget I had set aside. I love the SD card portability, ease of use, lightweight, size. Just be aware of what this camera can and can’t do well.

FYI – my indoor videos are keepers and have been cut to DVD, just grainy, especially on a HD tv.

Best Deal for the price

by Bob A. from on 2010-06-03
I have been Panasonic SDR-S26 SD Camcorder (Black) for about 6 months and am very happy with it. In my view it is the best deal for the price.
PROS
1. Ease of use: for most of the situation you do not need to make/change any setting, just power on and start shooting.
2. Good for both indoor and outdoor recordings.
3. I like its zoom mic feature, the mic sensitivity increases with zoom.
4. 70x Optical zoom. You can easily zoom without any sound in recording. It is very easy to use the zoom controls, you can easily control how quick it zooms.
5. Image stabilization is also very good. For most of the zoom range you get a very stable video.
6. I also like the SDHC card option as compared to hard disks (hard disks are slow and prone to damage).

CONS
1. In bright out door environments you may not get good colors. You can improve outdoor colors by using a UV filter. The size is 37mm.
2. The included battery give less than an hour of recording. You can always get extra batteries. I got a very good deal from E… (two batteries and wall/car charger).
3. The included software is very limited. You will have to use other editing/converting tools, one freeware to consider is VirtualDub (enables you de-interlace and convert to other formats).

In short, I am very happy with this purchase.

I am most impressed. This camera is an excellent choice for families.

by J. Morgan from Colorado on 2010-05-07
I will try to be brief. This camera turned out be more than I expected as far as satisfaction with the pictures and ease of use.
My grandchildren have already made hours of video. They only needed to learn a couple of controls and to be sure the recording is off when not shooting. The battery life is incredible considering the compact size and cost ($15) for the battery. There’s no way to give a definitive running time for the battery. We have settled on using just a 4G SDHC card and find that recording a full 4G takes about 2.5 battery recharges and the content of a 4G card fits nicely on the DVD-RW. Burning a DVD from the camera to my laptop takes almost an hour. My laptop is about 4 years old so a newer PC or a dedicated burner might go faster. The camera is easy to pocket. The picture quality at high zoom is acceptable (especially considering the cost of the camera). Still shots are most impressive given that the video function is primary. Sound quality is also very good. If I lose or drop this one, I’ll go back for another of the same.

Good camera for a good price

by Denis from on 2010-07-19
I have not had problems with this camera. I have made very good movies and some pictures ok. The sw is not sophisticated, but sufficient for my needs. It’s a good product to use on weekends (register their children on the beach, shooting a sport using the powerfull zoom), without major pretensions. I recommend the purchase. Good buy with a good price.

Falls frustratingly short for a Canon product

by James Beswick from San Francisco, CA on 2010-06-02
Canon seems to have taken a step down from the comparatively-excellent FS200 with a range of features that fall short in so many areas. As others have mentioned, the software included is practically useless, but more importantly the video quality just isn’t there. There are major compression artifacts that appear whenever there’s significant movement or any zooming used, it handles low night very poorly, resulting in grainy video, and the single-shot feature produces low quality shots comparable with those you would see on a cell phone.

Inexplicably, Canon has removed the audio in jack that came on the FS200, meaning there’s no way to use an external microphone to capture any sound. Consequently, there’s camera noise in every video, which is surprisingly loud considering it has so few moving parts. Combined with the fact that it comes with no memory (contrary to indications in the manufacturer’s own product description), the FS300 feels more like a budget version of the 200 rather than an upgrade. As for documentation, I agree with other reviewers – I wouldn’t normally notice a poor quality manual in electronics but I needed it to find the power-in jack, which is superbly camouflaged on the unit.

Overall, it’s small and easy to carry around but falls short of the quality I’ve come to expect from Canon products. I can’t use this for pro-sumer video capture as I had planned to, and apart from the decent zoom function there’s not much to separate from a Flip at half the price. Let’s hope the FS400 fixes the plethora of faults, though I’ll be waiting to the see the reviews before parting with my cash so hastily!

Canon FS300 Bad camera bad tech support

by P. Broderick from New Mexico on 2010-05-20
I purchased a Canon FS300 april 9,2010. For approx two weeks I was calling tech support in VA for help with this camcorder and finally On April 26, I finally spoke to a tech that knew that this camcorder was defective. All that time I could have returned it within 15 days to Best Buy online, but the agents don’t know what they are doing. It took one day to get the UPS label, but two days to get to UPS. I was without this camcorder for almost 3 weeks, all the time calling and explaining I need this camcorder for legal purposes as I have digital recordings for court and a lawyer. After getting the camcorder back it had the same click click click sound like a reel to reel movie camera. Way past dealing with supervisors, and not a Customer Relations person, Jennifer stated that A “senior tech” will follow up on the following Tuesday (after 3 weeks of it not being in my hands) since Mondays were too busy. The “senior tech” had me go through settings to “tweak” the camera and the problem was still there. The repair center did NOT fix this camera. The senior tech stated he was sending an email to “Customer Relations” as it was indeed defective. He told me that he would email Jennifer. Today 5-20-10 I called Jennifer, she was not in the office until next week, so I spoke to a Michelle, who was cold and rude. She said she was a senior agent. I asked to speak to a supervisor above her, she told me that none were available. I told her that I would keep calling until I could speak to a supervisor. I finally got an agent to let me speak to “her” supervisor, and this supervisor stated they would send me another camera. I explained that “every supervisor” told me that Canon does not send “new” cameras, only refurbished ones. She told me they had one, right! She said the Senior tech does not have the seniority over the techs at the repair center. The Senior tech told me that is why he follows up?????? I told her I have to have this camera when I see the attorney on Tuesday, she refused to send me the new camcorder until she saw the tracking for the old one back. I told her that I have to have it for the lawyer. I told her I don’t want two of them I will take this old one on the same day I receive the new one, after verifying it doesn’t have the same problem, that she stated they all have. She refused to work with me. I recommend NO ONE deal with canon, they don’t know what they are doing. I’m stuck with a defective camcorder.
