Hd Camcorder Dvd

Hd Camcorder Dvd

What resolution is a camcorder, and will a digital camera with 640×480 video be as good?

Also if i get a HD camcorder — how will i actually use the HD video captured, as i do not have a HD-DVD burner.

Many thanks.

You can’t

If you have a fast computer and expensive software like Premier Pro, Avid Prod, Vegas+DVD you can load it, edit it and render it as both HDV and SDV. You can then makes DVDs off the SDV AVI files.

You can then SAVE the HDV files until a future date when Blu Ray or HD DVD comes to burners, probably in 2009

Surprisingly good but a bit outdated.

by Keith Dickens from on 2009-11-02
Actually, it probably is outdated. The DVD format is not the most efficient way to go. But the quality of the shots I’ve gotten with this camera are awesome for the price I paid. I’m willing at this point to get the quality and do a little extra work in the post-production phase to convert the video.

It took a bit a bit to figure out the best way to get the video, in either SD or HD format off the disks and onto our editing machine. We used Any Video Converter (Free) to convert the files to a more editable format.

The quality of the camera when used with proper lighting is amazing for a single CMOS camera. It does have issues with poor lighting. It will become grainy, especially when working under red lights (like what we had in our haunted house).

The limited time that can be captured (especially under HD) per disk can be a problem if you just want to shoot all day long and not worry about changing disks. If you want to make webisodes/independent movies its not really that big of a problem if you manage disk space adequately and use DL disks.

There are also plenty of 37mm lenses that can screw onto the front of this thing but once it is attached BE CAREFUL. Its not a solid mounting system like you’d get with a prosumer/professional camera and I could image a good wack on the lens breaking the camera threads, lens and camera housing quite easily.

The two biggest things that I don’t like are the lack of any support on Canon’s website. I would have liked to have seen a firmware update available by now that would make increase the battery life, add additional presets, or improve focus detection. Not that any of those things are terrible now, but firmware updates can always make those things better.

The other problem that I have with the camera is that to capture pictures you’ll need to buy a miniSD card. Not SD, SDHC, or even microSD…but miniSD. A dead format for cards. So if you buy this camera don’t think that the plethora of SD cards you have laying around will cover you. You’ll need to buy a miniSD card or two from Amazon at the same time.

Great Camcorder

by Erwin Pili from NY, USA on 2009-01-01
I’ve had this camera for a few months now and so far no problems. There have been many events captured in HD – recitals, ball games, birthdays, etc. I have been able to use cheap DVD’s (available here at Amazon). It records in HD. Recorded media (8cm. DVD-R’s) is encoded in AVCHD and can be played directly using a bluray player.

cheaper still

by malcolm chun from honolulu, hi on 2008-11-17
i guess i got the best bargain at costco today for $330 period – thought i might have to return it as they didnt let me look at from the glass case – but with their return policy i got anyway – and reading all the 2007 reviews i guess i got a great buy during this horrible down turn – maybe i can record how the next great depression will be instead of listening to stories of my dad’s ten cent a loaf of bread

Nice product

by M. Kurapati from Fallschurch, VA United States on 2008-04-24
I got this at a cheaper price, but the quality is worth the price. It has features, that most other camcoders doesn’t have.

It uses a codec format, that stores HD media on non-HD media (like DVDs). Very Nice.

Does not work with Blu-ray

by Cross LInk from on 2007-12-03
I bought this camera because I thought it would be easy to record great HD images and play them back on my Blu-ray player quickly. Problem is this camera will not record on the new 8cm blu ray media. This means it will only record for 23 mins with the largest disc available in HD mode. I would suggest the hard drive format until they get this availability. Better yet I would go with the Sony if you want to use the new Blu-ray 7.5 8cm discs which will record for up to 2 hours.

The review of the Everio HD video camera and JVC CU-VD40

by David R. Evans from Mercer Island WA on 2010-06-09
The JVC camera takes exceptional pictures but to download off the Everio GZ-HD7 to any DVD recorder is impossible one must buy the JVC- CU-VD40 Share Station burner and must use DVD R-DL discs that are not sold at any retail story simply stated it is a pain to have to go online to order these discs and if you are successful one can go through three discs at $3.00 each to get an hour of High Definition programming on the disc. The instructions aren’t complete. I called customer service they are not schooled in the challenges of downloading.

These products are big disappointment I would not recommen that anyone the JVC HD camer takes good pic but a realy expensive challenge to download off the hard drive

Worse yes these are sold by Best Buy where I purchase my movie camera, there is noone at Best Buy that has a clue on how to download off this camera

In summary the worse retail experience I have ever had.. JVC should take this product off the market for all the above reasons…

JVC Sharestation

by Randall C. Birchard from Council Bluffs. IA on 2009-09-19
Biggest piece of JUNK I’ve ever bought. It’ll starts to burn disk from the camera and then 2 to 3 disk in, when it says to change disk, it’ll tell you the disk is not compatible, so you never get all your files off your camera. It makes a good paper weight though.

Did not work w/my camera

A Total Waste of Money

by Matt Lee from Beijing, China on 2009-05-09
I, like others who foolishly purchased a JVC Everio Camera and Share Station found that the Share Station works very poorly, if at all. It burned the first few DVDs but stopped working and is now a $200 paperweight. Now my only concern is getting the video off of the camera and buying a product from a company that actually stands behind its products. I will not be buying a JVC product again.

Works Great

Owned this camera for 2 years hundreds of hours of HD video!

by E. Rountree from Montclair, NJ USA on 2010-06-21
This Camera only has one flaw that I’ve found in the 2 years of shooting with it and that is in very loud concert environments (near loudspeakers) the vibration shuts down the hard drive for secounds at a time. Other then that the camera is great. Manual focus takes getting used to and sucks compared to traditional lens ring. For the price this camera is unmatched. I purchased the canon dm-50 microphone 2 aftermarket batteries a micro sd card (to store still photos)and also canon’s wide angle lens. I use Corel software to edit, upload videos to you tube, and make DVDs. Would I buy this camera again? In a heart beat very very dependable and no tape hassles!

A bit bulky, in a fair condition, some scratches since it is refurbished. But it definitely works.

Chuckupman

by Craig A. Glomstead from on 2010-02-16
I think the hg 10 is a great camcorder for anyone who is interested. I bought this for shooting videos with my friends and it works great for that. If you want a proffesional camera I suggest you buy something else, but if you want a good quality camera you can dork around with, than this is for you. The only three things I found wrong with it were that the editing software that comes with it is absolutely terrible. It was so bad I was forced to pay another forty dollars to buy a editing software that accually works. Another problem is that the picture quality for some odd reason, sucks at night or in any dark areas. If you are going to be using your camecorder in lowlight situations, than I suggest you buy another one because the hg10 doesnt even have a nightime setting, the only thing close to that is a light you can turn on and off, but the light only really works within 8 feet. The last issue I had with the hg10 is that the sound quality on the mic really sucks, espesialy in windy conditions which cause the mic to only pick up loud fumbling sounds. If you are going to be using the hg 10 outside, at distances greater than 10 ft or for recording music than I suggest you get an external mic, but If you are just taping indoors at close distances, I dont think you will need one. I bought the canon dm 50 and It works really great for the conditions I use it in. So far I am mildly pleased with the hg10 and It has been working pretty good for me so far.

Fantastic Hard Drive Camcorder

by Corey L. Bishop from on 2010-02-05
I’ve had this camcorder for about 2 years. It captured the births of both my children and countless pictures and home movies of them both. I’ve taken my HG10 on a trip to Africa where it went on two safaris, photographed waterfalls, wildlife, & remote villages. I’ve taken it to Europe and Mexico. So, I think I’ve established I have lot of experience with the camera.

I have never had a problem either recording movies or taking pictures. It’s never failed me. The battery life is long. I can get about two days or so of heavy use without a recharge. The video quality is fantastic high definition. One surprise for me is the high quality still pictures it takes. It’s taken the place of my digital still camera ever since I bought it. The 40 GB hard drive is great. Since I’ve had the camera, I’ve never needed to clean off my videos. I do back them up regularly, though.

It’s also quite compact and light. Easy to travel with.

Really, there are only a few downsides:
1) The camera records to AVCHD files. While software support is better than when I first bought the camera, these files are still not supported by some editing software. And since it’s HD, the files get large fast. So, you need a fairly powerful computer to work easily with the files. One good thing is that YouTube accepts AVCHD (.mts) files directly now. I used to have to convert them.
2) Still photos are only saved on a microSD card. They aren’t saved on the hard drive. It’s not a huge issue. It’s just weird that I have this huge hard drive, but can’t save still pictures on it.

Bottom line. Great camera. I’m very happy with it. If this one ever dies, I’d by another one or the next version.

This is the holy grail of add-ons. Battery life becomes a ‘non-issue’ .. and it is not ‘uncomfortably large’ for the camera either.

All the power I need

good first step, still needs work

by D. MCKICHAN from on 2007-09-24
Picked up one of these about a year after it’s release and at a substantial savings vs. when it was first released. Looked at it’s replacements the ux5 and ux7 and decided that this model probably fit in between them as the ux5 seemed to have lost features and the ux7 gained. As the price was far cheaper then either, I decided to take the plunge.

Pros:

Very solidly made. This may be a con if you are looking for something light as it is fairly heavy, but the solid feel I think is nice.

Shoots great SD footage and HD footage converts to SD with the included software. Far better picture then the entry and mid level SD camcorders. Nice if you are going to be sending something to someone else, who may not be set up to view the disks in their native format.

In the proper light the HD footage is very nice. Not broadcast quality nice, but still much better then SD footage. Both my parents remarked seperately on how clear the picture was when they first saw it playing on a HD set.

Large 3.5″ screen.

Can be edited somewhat with included software, but is very basic.

A hotshoe for adding a light.

Straight to DVD can be nice if you have the means to play the new format (ie blu-ray player or very powerful computer)

Sound is very clear. I’m not an audiophile, but even I noticed the crystal clear sound and lack of any internal noise when I played back my recordings.

Cons:

Digital image stabilizer good but not great, optical would have been nicer.

You need a very fast processor (duo core). I have a P4 3.0ghz, seperate video card, with 2mb of ram and it cannot handle the format well at all. The ram is not the limiting factor, but the processor is. In checking my system utilities, my CPU is maxed out at 100%, with only about 400MB of ram being used. Hence I am getting dropped frames in playback. Also if you wish to take advantage of the DL disks (DVD+R DL’s only) you need a DVD drive capable of reading DL disks, which again would limit a lot of computers over 1 1/2 – 2 years old.

Indoor shots full of noticeable noise. Again outdoor well lit video is very nice. Indoors is still nicer then SD, but the noise is noticeable. I’m adding the sony light that goes on the hotshoe which should help.

For the price this is offered at now, It shoots as nice an SD picture as the SD only camcorders priced at or above this model. That you pick up HD is a nice bonus, and in the right conditions you can get great video and audio.

Great for Techies,Excellent quality HD

by Kevin from Orlando,Florida USA on 2007-05-13
Bottom line, the picture quality that you get is incredible on the standard HQ setting. You can go two levels higher(just higher bitrates) but you shorten your recording time to 20 minutes or 15 minutes depending on which you select. If you have a ps3 ,you can just pop the disk in and watch it on your high def tv. The Dolby Digital recording is excellent as well. I recorded a Disney show at Epcot and the sound was just like you were there. I couldn’t be happier with this camera but it may be a challenge for those who are beginners with high def equipment. It also records in standard dvd format if you choose. Nice feature but if that’s all you are using it for then you will want to go with a dvd camcorder which is much less money. If you have an external hard drive on your ps3 than you can copy the m2ts files from the stream folder on the dvd and just play them directly from the ps3 when you want. The ps3 downmixes from Dolby Digital to stereo which I hope can be fixed by one of their many firmware updates. If you do purchase this camera then go with the MiniDV-RW media as you can just copy to a standard dvd via the sofware included and then use your MiniDV-rw over many times. The stills are just ok but then again I am used to the Canon S2-IS which really does a great job. You have the options of 4mp,3mp widescreen,or 2mp screen capture during video recording. All seem to do a pretty good job.

Very Good, but not Great

by Brett Breeden from Deep in the Heart of Texas on 2007-04-18
A lot has already been said and there are some excellent reviews here (as well as elsewhere), but I just want to add my 2 cents. I purchased this guy a few months back, and have since purchased a light and a second battery for it (I’ll talk about those shortly).
My favorite features include:
1. The 3.5″ screen, which should be a must for ANY camcorder, as the 2.5″ screens common today are worthless IMHO.
2. The sliding door for accessing the HDMI port as well as the other video ports. This is unique to Sony’s UX1 and SR1 HD Camcorders (as far as I can tell) and is the BEST implementation I have seen to cover and uncover ports. Much better than the little plastic plugs that inevitably break-off and are lost.
3. Beautiful, detailed video.

My least favorite features include:
1. The stupid little plastic cover plug for the power port. As mentioned above, this camera has a great sliding door for all its video plugs. Inexplicably, Sony used the plastic plug for the power port, which is right next to the video ports and could have used the sliding door. Stupid. Mine is already threatening to break.
2. Short recording times. It is hard to blame Sony for the short recording time on DVDs. This is just a fact of life and the short time isn’t limited to the HD DVD camcorders but it problematic for all DVD camcorders (though less so than here). You make a choice and you live with it. While lots of the reviews mention the dual layer DVDs out there, they are MUCH more expensive and I don’t even really consider them an option. Luckily, the lower quality modes still look very good, especially when taping outside. For lower light situations, I would use the higher quality settings. Still, all of the video I take with this thing looks better than any standard def. stuff you may see. Also, related to the DVD issue is that the camera insists on popping up a little comment saying it recommends Sony brand DVDs every time I put in any other brand. This is completely annoying and Sony should rethink the way they try to lock you in to their own brand.
3. Automatic lens cover. Not having to bother with a cover is a great little addition to this thing.

Features I thought I wanted but could have lived without:
I haven’t yet used the focus ring or the mic in or headphone out yet. I really wanted these, but in retrospect, they were unnecessary for my home use. The mic on this thing is plenty good, and I just don’t want to mess with the focus at the end of the day.

Other notes:
I purchased a light and an extra battery here on Amazon and couldn’t be happier with them. The light is the Sony HVL-HL1 and the battery is the same one that comes with the camera, the Sony NPFM50. The light is just right to give a boost to indoor recording and makes the picture MUCH better in low light situations. It’s only 3 watts but seems VERY bright. It attaches to the hot shoe on the top of the camera. It’s priced right and works flawlessly.
As for the grainy picture mentioned by many reviews, I haven’t noticed anything distracting. Every camera has positive and negative aspects, but I am more than happy with the quality of video this thing takes.
I give this Camcorder 5 stars not because it is perfect, but if you weigh the price and the features, I’m not sure there is a better HD or SD camera out there right now. It would not be worth the list price, but at the price they have it for now, you simply can’t beat it, as long as you can live with the DVD format. If that is a dealbreaker for you (it wasn’t for me, obviously), it’s a dealbreaker, but otherwise, this is by far the best buy at this price point.

Awesome!!!!!!!!

This is an awesome piece of equipment! This cam produces some of the most stunning video and right now the price has to be the deal of the decade! The dvd format is outstanding and it really is the best of both worlds. I use -rw discs and copy my video to my computer then reformat the disc (which takes about 7 seconds) and use it over and over again so the price of media is virtually nothing, unlike tape which you have to keep buying and buying. The other benefit is unlike a hard disk based cam I dont have to worry about the drive filling up while I’m on vacation with no place to offload the video. And unlike A tape based cam I dont have all the problems associated with tape like head cleaning and trying to dig out tape that is wrapped up inside the cam or having to endure hours of tedious capturing or having to properly tension a tape before use or how big of a box I need to store all those old tapes in or worrying about recording over something I have already shot. I could go on and on and on about it but tape is just an old unreliable pain in the rear. As you can tell I have had bad experiences with tape based cam’s so enough of that.

The AVCHD codec is very efficient you will have about 4.5gb per hour of video compared to 13gb per hour of video from a tape based hdv cam and it records audio in dolby 5.1 surround which is alot better than the stereo only that you get with hdv.

Others have mentioned the short recording time and I suppose it may be an issue for someone but it is not for me. Think about it when you are watching tv or a movie how many times does the cam just sit there pointed at one thing without a break for longer than a minute (or even a few seconds)? There is nothing I can think of that I can record for more than 20 minutes (hq mode) straight that I would want to sit down and watch anyways. Now if you have to record something like a childs school play sure maybe a couple times in your childs life you need an hour shot but I dont and even if an event took say 1 hour straight it only takes 15 seconds to change out a disc and be recording again so in 1 hour I would change twice and miss 30 seconds of video, not a big deal. Most all the stuff I shoot is like 1-3 minutes tops and I’m on to the next scene. I have shot a wedding and I was able to get all of it from the time the bride walks in to the time the couple walks out all on 1 20 minute disc. I think most of the people that complain about short recording times are just to lazy to change a disc! As far as the video being noisy in low light well give me a break, it does but so does every other cam that is priced south of $3,500.00! Besides that they do make these things called lights! In the daylight there is no noise at all in the video when played back on my HDTV, just beautiful high def video.

The bottom line for me is that this cam is by far the best bang for the buck available today. Nothing in this price range even comes close to the video quality that this cam produces. It is a snap to record brilliant video and transfer it to the computer. Editing options are limited right now but they do exist and more are on the way so the editing thing is a non issue as well. It has pro type features that are just not found on other cams and I especially like the manual adjustment ring and I would never own a cam again that did not have at least a 3.5″ lcd screen. Having used the smaller 2.7″ screens before I can tell you that the big screen is way better especially when you are trying to manually adjust elements like focus and exposure. With the big screen you can actually tell what your video will look like, the small screens just dont show enough detail. This cam also takes beautiful still pictuers, I could keep going on and on but the truth is I really enjoy everthing that this cam has to offer and I would not trade it for anything else.

Mini-DVD’s have limits

by Matthew R. Bouldry from Salem, MA USA on 2009-06-02
The reviews here are well done and pretty comprehensive. Check out the CONs before you buy. The Mini-DVD’s won’t go in my Macbook, which I should have realized before buying. I thought for sure I could pop the dvd’s in and use Handbrake to grab the clips. You can’t, and only 15 minutes of HD video on a DVD is not practical at all…

AND — I’m also VERY disappointed because my camera died 91 days after I bought it, which means it costs me $165 (plus tax and shipping) to send the camera to Texas to get it fixed. I bought it in Feb. 2009 for $359.00

First video camera I ever owned and I am really pleased. I am gradually learning what all it will do and with each discovery I am amazed. So far it has performed well and the movies are great. I recommend it highly.

Excellent

by Anuar Barake from Santiago, Chile on 2008-01-20
I think that the HD is in progress, because when I record in HD HQ, I can’t edit the recorded material in the cam before finished the DVD.
I don’t have been used all the facilities of the cam recorder.

Thanks.

Would highly recommend

For the product and technical illiterate, this is a great camera. For those who know a little bit more, it is an excellent camera. Easy to set up, use and edit. Placing the dvd directly into the camera is the best! Finalise it, and walk right over to the DVD player…Awesome!

Overpriced and Underwhleming

by Justin Teague from Houston, TX USA on 2007-12-06
With the advent of the sub-$200 HD-DVD players flooding the market, the honeymoon period for this nasty little beast is long-gone. Don’t be tempted, as I was, by its ability to play JVC HDV files natively. It is spotty at best and truly unnecessary given the alternatives available.

If you do dive in, be prepared for the laugh-riot butcher job of the English language that is the manual and the remote is hopelessly arcane. Boot time for this makes Haley’s Comet seem all too frequent and simply navigating the menu is enough to drive all but the strongest of us to anti-depressants.

A/V connectors are loose and unreliable and the DVI output is severely crippled. Front-side buttons are cheap and flimsy and seem to have a high false-positive ratio.

This has been on the market for some time and is ready to be retired. It’s time to let it move on. Let go.
