Good HD video is 1920x1080 (and HDV is actually only 1440x1080), so taking video frames 2MP is limited (but really in the best 1.5MP), whether the camera. Canon As says, if you shoot 30P then you do not have to worry about interlacing, which helps with vertical detail. Based on previous Sony's I'm guessing the SR12 is only 60i, which means it has to deinterlace the video to store one frame, and that means losing quality.
