Advice on building a High-Def editing computer?
I am looking to build up a new computer primarily to edit High-Def videos. This will be a custom built PC running Windows 7. I will need capability to run a dual-screen setup. I will not be playing games so graphics card(s) need not be top-of-the-line, but at least handle high-def video playback well on one or two screens. Boils down to what are good motherboards, video card(s), and memory hardware for the task. I will be running dual 500gig SATA drives in RAID 0 config for video data, and a third smaller drive running the OS. I am currently looking into using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 as the editing software, but due to cost may downgrade to a cheaper editor.
Any help / advice on hardware and editing software will be helpful. I am in IT, and know how to build / configure computers. My budget is 2-3K for this build. Thanks!
You’re in the right budget range.
Video editing puts massive loads on the processor and memory. The best option currently is an Intel Core i7 900 series processor, with triple channel memory. A moderately good nVidia video card (around the GTS 250/GTX 260 level) gives you the double display support AND lots of CUDA processors that can boost your video effects in Premiere.
A BluRay burner is needed, and adds a noticeable amount to the bill. A solid-state-disk for the OS and photo editing software is a good idea. 40GB should be enough for that. Make sure the 500GB drives are at least 7200 rpm and NOT eco friendly (having one disk power down in a RAID 0 array is a really bad thing).

That should come in < $2K. Barely. You could drop another $1K by getting the i7-980X hex-core cpu.
